For My First Time, TI Jazz Flats Incoming.....

Saw where Sweetwater had a sale going on for TI Jazz Flats, JF344, 43 to 100's.
So I made a impulse buy.

I'm a long time nickel round wound user (Dunlop Super Bright Nickel's, 40 to 100's), have been pretty much since they came on the market, Sunbeams before that, Blue Steel before that, Fender Nickel Rounds before that, ect

I've always wanted to try TI flats from the T.B. reviews but was always put off by their price.

Hope my ears and fingers will like em!

The tension is one of my concerns.

The group I'm with tunes down a half a step.

The rounds I use are at 40 to 100 gauge. They stay stable at 440 and when tuned down also without having to do a change in the basses' setup/action.

I'm hoping the TI's will do the same.

Just play through it and let yourself have a week to get the hang of it. They feel a little different. But they sound wonderful and they even keep enough snap to hit the bright notes when you need. You’ll appreciate the uniformity all up the neck.

The Jazz Rounds are also quite amazing.

You may need to turn your truss a bit due to lower tension.

I know TI Flats are low tension relative to other flats. . . . But if you've been downtuning such a light gauge Dunlop SBN, I can't imagine the TI Flats will be any looser than that.

I had a set on a fretless PBass for a few years. I'm pretty heavy with my right hand and was concerned about the tension, but really didn't notice much, if anything, different about them in that regard.

But, tuning down, which is evidently a thing now, I don't know. Never tried that.

Give yourself some time w/ them. I did and they've been on all my basses ever since.

I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on the TIs after you've played them a little (tone, feel, stiffness or lack of). I am also considering buying them for the first time and I've read widely varied opinions on TB about the tension. No concerns about the tone.

I've two Jazz basses.

My main gigging bass, a old, old, old passive that will keep the Dunlop SBN rounds on.

My back-up bass, a 2014 active/passive Fender Elite.
It's getting the TI's.

I'm playing Thursday, Friday Saturday and Sunday this week (Friday and Saturday are outdoor jobs, so weather permitting.)

Hopefully, (and I realize they'll not be anywhere close to being broken in yet), by using them off and on in a live sitting I'll have a rough idea if the TI's are gonna work for me.

But like you, I won't be surprised if I go back to using rounds.

If you like a defined mid range tone these are great ! I think you will love them !
Also if you have a bass with a weak tross rod these are a great option !

Give it a try! It may become your lifelong strings as long as it doesn't snap.
The rounds sound very close to the flats. It's more of a feel difference than a round/flat tonal difference.
For slightly higher tension you could try the extra-long JF364 pack. It comes with a thicker E string, and the extra scale shouldn't be a problem when fitting around the tuner post.

Few old day set of JF344 sound better than 2 current dat set I been use. Both E string on current set just sound duller , she suppose sound as bright as the A string.

I had the TIs on a fretless jazz, which unfortunately just begs for rounds.

TIs are still sitting in the draw though, one day I'll get a P bass for them.

They take a long time to break in. Like 2 months of practicing and gigs for me. Make sure to evaluate them in a band setting. Alone in a bedroom they can sound kind of meh compaired to rounds, but they really shine when the band kicks in. Make sure to set up your bass for them and re dial in your amp.
