For My First Time, TI Jazz Flats Incoming.....

I just received a new to me Mercalli 5 that the buyer said TI Flats were installed. While I liked the sound and tone could not get past the feel. With that being said I replaced them with rounds this past weekend. I do not know how old they are, just know the have red silk at each end.
Whoever wants them let me know. They are yours. I'd rather someone put them use.
I'll post a photo of them later when I get home.

I just got a set of TI JF344 and am trying them out … my regular Jazz Bass is using 45-100 rounds. The JF344 tension feels like 40-95 rounds. They do feel good though.

Tone-wise, I miss the clarity of rounds. The JF344 sounds relatively dull BUT I need to explore more with EQ to get to sound like what I hear on the YouTube videos.

Maybe I still need to break them in and listen to them in a band like what @gmarcus says.

I just bought a brand new set of JF344's for an Ibanez UB804 electric upright bass. They're really bright sounding with a ton of sustain. I expect some of that brightness probably will be fine after being worn in for a while. Also, I'm betting that this bass has a lot more to do with the sustain/growl I'm getting, as the previous strings (the D'Addarios that came with it) sounded similar. I'm going to be patient, as I'm getting used to the new bass and new strings.

These Ibanez UB804 basses are the most responsive fretless instrument I've ever played (compared to an old Precision fretless with a rosewood fingerboard, another one with a maple one, Godin A5 and A4 fretless semi-hollow body basses (with richtite and ebony fingerboards), and two Upton Hawkes plywood and hybrid upright basses).

So I'm not judging the strings as much as I am learning to tame the extreme fretless responsiveness and sound of the instrument.

I'm a long time nickel round wound user (Dunlop Super Bright Nickel's, 40 to 100's), have been pretty much since they came on the market, Sunbeams before that, Blue Steel before that, Fender Nickel Rounds before that, ect

I've always wanted to try TI flats from the T.B. reviews but was always put off by their price.

I’m a long time TI jazz flats guy myself. Their high price is offset by their longevity. However, I recently tried some GHS Balanced Nickels round wound and love them also. So I’m now a two string lover. They each have their own unique sound, tension and feel. Experiment!

Amazon is cheaper:


They are my go to strings but you will need to adapt to the string tension. I tried tuning to D standard and they were way to loose for me. A half step is borderline in my opinion. Truss rod will need a bump and action will need to be raised to avoid fret buzz, at least for the way I play…

The good news is that once you install them you may never have to change your strings on that bass again! I love TI's, and have had them on 2 of my basses for 10 years. Just a heads up that you can buy TI flats for $15-$20 less on Amazon. They're in the European packaging, but rest assured, the strings are the same. I've bought several sets off Amazon over the past 3+ years, as most of my basses have these strings.

Current price is $66, however, prices have been as low as $61 in recent months.

Don't expect flat wound strings to sound like the round wounds you are familiar with. We use them for what they do best.

Some local guy here been trying different flats ... so far he's unsatisfied with the sound so I bought another set of flats off him for like half the price. Lol. Now I got the Fender 9050 too. Put hose on my 78 Jazz. The TI is on my CIJ JB62 fretless.

I tried TI's. The tension felt odd. Tried some Dunlops. Felt better and sounded ok but not like the TI's. Went back to the TI's and have had them on my P ever since. They just sound and feel so good. I am used to the tension thing now. I just try to play with a lighter touch on that bass. It works for the gigs it sees.
