For you SX haters!!!

Yes, I've mentioned that a number of times in this thead.

Stock ones remind me of 70's P bass tone, which while fine, isn't what I was after.

The Lollar put the tone much closer to my 64 Fender, which was the tone I was after.

I haven't read this whole thread, but I thought I saw where you said that the only split-P pickups you liked were the Lollar and the Fender Original aka '62 RI.

I've been through about ten of htose style pickups and haven't found one I liked; a few were ok, but nothing special. I'll be trying out an Original soon and hope to hear good things.

I've been trying to get an idea of what's different in the good ones. All I can guess is the type (not size) of wire, length and strength of the magnets, and the coil height.

Do you remember if the Lollar looked like it was taller or shorter than most?

The Fender Original 62 and the Lollar are my two personal favorites, with a slight edge to the Lollar, but by no means the only Split Coils that I like. My preferance is for the 60's vintage type tone, and those two do that VERY well IMO.

Can't rememeber if the Lollar was taller or shorter than most. Seemed pretty standard size so far as I can recall. Split coils can be fine tuned with hight adjustments quite a bit too. Playing around with the hight can help dial them in quite a bit. I personaly tend to run the p/us fairly low and then work the e/q on the amp to taste. That's alwasy worked for me, as I find most P's p/us are way too close to the stings, and can get a little boomy.

Jason is REAL good about answering questions though. I'm sure he'd fill you in if you shot him an email from his website. Tell him exactly what your after, and I bet he can wind you up something to suit your personal taste.

Great people to deal with.

The language used certainly appears to be at least somewhat purposfully chosen to be at least mildly inflamitory. :) I'm sure you can see that.

Again, I'm not losing sleep over it, and this isn't the worst case I've ever seen of it, but I still think it's worth mentioning. :cool: I'm sure your a fine upstanding person, but you must know that the words chosen were going to stir some emotion, and get a strong rebuttle.
  1. I think a few factor you may be ignoring is the title of the thread. It's for SX Haters: not SX Dislikers; not SX Detractors; but SX Haters. The title sets a certain tone, and viewed in that context, my remarks have to be considered to be quite mild in tone (or as you put it, "mildly inflammatory");
  2. I may be the only TBer who, until this thread, had never heard of you and had no idea that you were an SX owner. So it's not like I was out to get you;
  3. I don't think you're giving me quite enough credit for acknowledging that SXes are not pieces of junk, that they are remarkably solid for their cost, and that the fact that Kurt is able to offer them at that price is a business achievement of some note;
  4. If someone had come on here and said that Fender owners are kidding themselves, that they're paying for a logo, and that they aren't worth the price you pay, I might disagree but I wouldn't feel the need to respond as if attacked personally.
Do you see where I'm coming from here? It seems to me you may have painted me with the wrong brush.

But to have that same SX replace a Fender, Sadowsky, Nordy, or Lakland as a cat's main gigging bass is nothing short of insane, mods or no mods.

Why? Just because they have "better" reputations than SX? I'm not knocking those other brands -- they make some very nice instruments. But to say you can't gig with an SX just because it doesn't say Fender, Sadowsky, Nordy, etc. on the headstock is just plain dumb.

A Fender and an SX both do the same thing -- they enable you to play music. They also accomplish this the same exact way. The only differences are the price and the quality of the parts used. Both can be made to sound the way you need them to for a gig. The name on the headstock is immaterial.

Maybe Fender is able to take the rigors of day-in day-out gigging better than SX. I don't know, I've never done a comparison. But a few people here use SX as their main bass on gigs all the time. And they haven't had any major problems.

I now have two SX basses. My latest being an SPJ Ash model with natural finish. I like them, especially the newer Ash model.
Neck and body are a low luster (non stick) item. I like it but it is not an MIA which I once owned. It is however better than the typical Squier and about equal with an MIM. MIJ in addiion to MIM are good guitar's in their own right.
This guitar, while very good for the amount of money you spend in relation to what you get is phenomenol.

Well, first off. I don't veiw what you've said as any kind of an attack on me personaly. ;) I've tried to keep my replies somewhat lighthearted with smiles winks etc, with some amount of seriousness as well. Some of the language used I'm sure was a bit irritating to more than just me.

So that said. I don't take it TOO personaly , just so ya know. ;)

O.k, I'll give you credit for the positive stuff you've said, but honestly, the other stuff kind of outweighs that.. Kind of like if you said... Hey lady, that's a nice dress your wearing.. too bad it makes you look so fat ;) SEE how that works. :D I'm sure miss nice dress wouldn't be thinking.. well at least he liked my dress. :)

Now on to the most important part. Here's the actual O.P.

For you SX haters!!

I'm ordering Friday but can't decide on the black jazz 5 string to do a 5 string Geddy look or one of those sharp quilted wood grain 4 string jazzes. I just keep looking at both of them and can't decide!!!

Now, according to some , I might be "tone deaf" but I CAN read! LOL!! :)

My translation of this is..

Hey all you people who hate SX threads... Here's another SX thread for you all to b#tch about... Which SX should I buy the black 5'er or the quilted one? :)

NOT

Hey everyone who hates SX basses. Vent here.

I believe the thread title was sarcasm. Looks like a bunch of poeple missed that. ;)

I got it, and I'm sure others did too.

Like I said earlier, I'm sure your a stand up guy. And you have every right to say what you'd like, but I also have a right to reply, rebut and refute as well.

None of this is personal on my end. Again, just sharing my personal experiences. :)

Exactly savit. The OP also shouldn't even started this thread. There's a perfectly fine SX megathread where he could get all the answers he needs about SX basses.

http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=385745

I'm amazed at how far this thread has gone in just a few days. The SX megathread has been dead too...

With that said, I'm diggin' my new SX... :bassist:

I have nothing against inexpensive basses. My gripe is supporting the country where they come from and their total lack of manufacturing, labor and copyright ethics.

I still consider most of the threads on this site about SX bass guitars as spam...too many that could have been a quick search. Make a section for SX guitars and mods to your SX guitar and give them somewhere to chat with each other. I'm sure you could take out the ASK MIKE WATT section :( I've lost hope he is coming back.

I've made that suggestion before. Never even got a reply. They could at least make a sticky with links to all the recurring questions. I would think it would be in their best interest to save bandwidth.

Marty, Why are you so offened by SX threads? You continue to imply that Rondo is putting up these threads when you call them Spam, and that's just not the case. There just happens to be a fair amount of satisfied customers, all who have slapped down their hard earned dollars for these insturments, and are sharing our experineces.

Nobody is making you read the threads. Is having to click the mouse a line or two early to get to "page 2" REALLY that inconvenient?

That's a political discussion isn't it? I thought we didn't get into political stuff here on TB. Isn't that in the rules section?

I don't believe any copyrights are being infringed on with SX products. If they were they would have been shut down by now, along with Sadowsky, Lakland, Lull etc. etc.
