For you SX haters!!!

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...

SX pickups are better than Selects... Don't touch the pickups, maybe shielding and replace pots. 30 bucks upgrade, that's all it takes...

+1 on that. The pickups on these are actually pretty good, at least on the newer ones. The pots do suck though, replace those and you'll be surprised how much better it sounds just from that.

The original reason for that pickup swap was technique related. I really like to dig in when I play with my fingers, so anything with exposed poles causes problems. To my ear, the Selects are a lot punchier and help me get the tone I'm after. The stock SX pickups are nice too, I put those in a different bass and they really brought it to life. Stock pots are no good though. Those need to go.

OK, you got me. I'll go order an SX now. Seriously. I know when I'm licked. No sarcasm. I'll post pics.

As for my profile, I'll fill it in the next time I do something musically that's worth a damn. My glory days, such as they were, happened long ago. I had a very successful band in high school, mostly due to the talent of guys other than myself. I was the bassist along for the ride. I still love playing, though, and I remain extremely passionate about music. So that's why I'm on TB. Whom are you dealing with? No one of consequence.

Seriosly though, It really is helpful in a discussion such as this to have some idea of weather your talking to. Experience or doing stuff of note really doesn't matter. I, and I'm sure others, find profiles EXTREEMLY helpful when discussing gear, so I have some idea of their perspective and personal tastes. Hell, I'm a hack who's had a little bit of luck , that's all. :)

Before this post , I had no idea if I was debating a 14
year old or 55 year old. It certainly helps with perspective. ;)

The thing here is that many of us here have had very positive experiences with our SX products, and are willing to share those experiences with other.
Usually during these discussions, some will jump in and insult , impune, demine and disparage, not only the instruments themselves, but those who chose to play them for what ever reason.
When that happens, you can be sure that some of us will stick up for what we believe is a solid and workable product at an outstanding price. A product that can be tweaked and modded to preform as well, if not better than stuff costing much much more.

No, an SX isn't for everyone, nor should they be, but a lot of us are very happy with them, and want to share our positive and negative experiences. Is there anything so wrong with that?

Would you want to be on the recieving end of the language that you've used in this thread? ;)

I think you'll notice that no has said "abandon your Fenders". It's mostly people with SX's passing along their experinces to people who are interested in the product, and want to know "are they really any good at such a cheap price"

Sadowsky fans don't start 50 threads per day asking the same questions over and over and over and over and...................:help:

I think that people can assume that there is a certain level of quality when forking over $4k for a bass. At $150 , I think it's a fair question to ask "are they any good". Also, there are probably far more TB memebers who have an SX in their budget than a Sadowsky, as well as the limitations of the TB search engine regarding SX.

If 10 threads a day get's more people involved in making music, then I think it's fine.

Don't click the thread. Works every time you try it. ;)

Don't see why not, if someone really believed them and backed them up convincingly.

And BTW, I'm 39 years old, not 14.

So we're roughly the same age. That's why filling in the profile helps. Perspective. :)

Trust me, as much as I believe in the product, the insults get old. ;)

I've been called idoit, insane, tone deaf, stupid, clueless etc. etc. mostly from people who have no experience with these basses, and many times after posting plenty of evidence to the contrary. Of course that's always HERE on TB, not in the real world working and gigging these basses. NEVER have I heard a negative word uttered in my direction in that context.. you know... out actually making music with the things. Yeah, it get's tiresome, but at the same time, I'm still mildly amused.

Let's be fair, though. Nothing I said comes close to calling you any of those names. Also, I think you need to distinguish between relatively mild remarks of a general nature ("people who like SXes are kidding themselves") and things that are insulting, ad hominem attacks ("Savit is a moron," which I would never say unless I knew you and had reason to think you actually were a moron; and even then, I'd hold my tongue because to do otherwise would be unkind). It's not fair to characterize what I've said as mindless or mind-spirited. Agree or disagree, I like to think that most of my posts are at least somewhat thoughtful and informed.

O.K. let's review. :)

It seems to me that for TBers, SX basses are like movies people haven't seen: not having played them doesn't prevent them from having an (entirely uninformed) opinion!

The trouble is, for all but the most indifferent or deaf player, you simply aren't, in that case, spending enough money to produce a solid sound and get solid playability

Certainly fine for a beginner, for someone seek a cheap mod platform, or for a distant backup instrument. But those folks who think an SX belongs as your main gigging bass are probably kidding themselves. They really think they're happy, and that's great to a point. But then, a lot of folks think they are happy running Windows on their computers until they try Mac OS or Linux. Lots of people think they love their abusive/drunk/indifferent significant other, too, until they are free of them.

.

My point exactly. You don't see how it's possible, and neither do they. And I'm happy for those who are satisfied with these substandard instruments, I really am. It's great that they get so much joy for so little money. It's just not there for me, and I think the SX-teria around here is misplaced. This Chinese Emperor has no clothes.

We're talking about inanimate objects here, not people.

The thing is , you are talking about people with the language you've chosen. Yes, I'm one of those people. ;)

Yeah, I do find that to be a bit insulting, but I've got pretty thick skin, so I won't be losing any sleep over it, but at the same time, I'm not going to sit by idle, and not respond.

I hope you understand that. The language used certainly appears to be at least somewhat purposfully chosen to be at least mildly inflamitory. :) I'm sure you can see that.

Again, I'm not losing sleep over it, and this isn't the worst case I've ever seen of it, but I still think it's worth mentioning. I'm sure your a fine upstanding person, but you must know that the words chosen were going to stir some emotion, and get a strong rebuttle.
