For you SX haters!!!

This is to me, what this argument is actually like.

Some people like to get to point A to point B in the most cost efficient manner, some people have money to spend and like nice things.

This is true enough, but what is unfortunate, is the "nice things" crowd having to put down, disparage and trash, perfectly funcitional, and reliable "workhorse" instruments, by calling them "junk" "garbage", "firewood" etc, and liken them to a cardboard box.

Hey, I have "nice things" basses too, and still play an SX 99% of the time.

Most of this thread has been about comparing SX basses to Squires and MIM Fenders; since when are Squires and MIM Fenders considered nice things by bass standards. Now, don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with Squires and MIM Fenders, but they are not top of the line luxury basses.

Nah, a lot of this thread is "theres no way you could ever feel what it feels like to play on my $4000 bass vs. your $100 SX."

I don't like squires and MIM fenders for the same reason I don't like SX, they both lack something for me, they just don't fit right.

In fact, most of the MIA fenders that I've played are also lacking...

Yep... there's a time and place for ghetto blasters like the SX and Squiers but most of the time, they don't even touch the high dollar stuff playwise (though sometimes I find they do, tone-wise!)

Just to throw another monkey in the works, I'll say the SX basses I own do have THIN paintjobs. Less than a 1/4 mm thick. The Fenders I have owned are 3 times as thick. It's a lot less paint, a third of the paint. Great way to save some money on the instrument build cost.

The same thing a custom builder would advertise as a selling point for better tone. :)

Looks like someone has moderator aspirations :smug:
lol!

Nope, my rap sheet's too long I'd imagine. :ninja: I just get annoyed with the n00bs who appear out of nowhere, never fill out their profiles, and all but immediately begin talking crap to a core group of people who have been here a long time. It destroys their credibility, and just annoys the poop outta me. ;)

We've disagreed on lots of stuff, but always kept it civil, no? :)

I find it funny how much people plug "playability"

How complicated do you think a bass is? It's a neck, body, bridge, and nut. There's no super magic process these $1500 standard production basses like Fender use that automatically makes them permanently superior to everything else.

You can take an SX neck, and assuming the construction of it is what it should be (i.e. not twisted or something of the like) and with a full fret job it can play just as well as an MIA Fender can. Is there something about a level fretboard of a Fender that a cheaper copy can't achieve with the right work? I fail to see it. My SX Jazz has had such treatment, and it does indeed PLAY (mechanically) as easily as any other bass I've tried under $2000, and the ones above that I don't like because the action is TOO low, an they become clanky if you play with any enthusiasm, but they'd be great for more classical stuff. I live 30 minutes from Bass Central, don't even try to tell me I don't know what high dollar instruments feel like.

Most of the time you're paying for what others have already said, advertising, R&D, a bit more quality control, and when it comes to MIA vs China stuff, it's wood choice and hardware quality.

American Fenders are the standard and they probably always will be, I doubt anyone argues that. There isn't anything on them that people would consider "sub-par" or not usable. The biggest difference between those and cheaper versions is wood choice. They use better wood, period. Hardware and electronics are also better, but it's nothing that can't be upgraded to on other things. Now, how many of you could actually tell the difference between 2 or 3 pieces of alder? That's the question of the day. But some people pay for that peace of mind. I used to do the same thing, but at the moment I find I have just as much fun playing cheaper basses that I'm not going to have an aneurysm about if it gets a ding in it.

Here's a banana for your monkey...if Fender used less paint it would a big deal because it allows the bass to breathe better and improves tone and resonance.

You get the same thing outside of TB as well. Until very recently I drove a 1993 geo prism for years. a few weeks ago I "upgraded" to a camry/laklandskyline. At work, one of the first comments I got was "why didnt you get a bmw/audi/lexus/whatever. Well, uh, why bother? The Geo served the EXACT same function as the BMW 700 series that the A-hole at work brags about incessantly. Fact is my geo/sx gets better mileage, requires, less maintenance, and cost about 35 times less than his bmw/sadowsky. And I cant justify spending that much money on a car/bass when all it does it get me from point a to point b.

Or I cant afford it. IN which case, does belittling the camry or geo make you feel better?

You can fill in the rest of the analogies that I left out. Its the same thing.

Shame on those who belittle my geo.
