For you SX haters!!!

Of the five SX basses that I've owned, both fretless and fretted, I've never had to mod any of them. I bought one used that already had Fender Noiseless pickups installed. I modded a P-bass with Quarter Pounders because I was looking for a certain sound (which I got). But I didn't have to do it. I wanted to do it. The only "mods" I needed to do were new strings and an occasional truss rod tweak here and there. That's it. I had no interest in nor any need to mod any of them to be playable. I bought 3 new and 2 used.

Fact is, I'm not a fan of SX basses - not because of their price (or more clearly their lack thereof), quality of wood/pickups/hardware/Quality Control, but that the vast majority of owners I've spoken to and heard from have done at least some modifications to them. And a great deal of them not to improve on the bass primarily like the modding community, but to make them simply playable which I think defeats the whole purpose of their price-point, especially when "Beginner Basses" such as Squires, Ibanez, Yamaha and others have risen the bar tremendously compared to the near-unplayable "Pro Session" P-bass copy I started on... and not in the '60s or '70s, but 1989. I simply think there is much better around what they sell for, and that every year the competition increases.

I have submitted a new forum thread with a poll to track whether or not people have had to mod their SX basses to make them simply playable. Hopefully we can get a good feel for what the 'vast majority' of Talkbass SX owners have had to do (or not do) to their SX basses.

Here is the thread/poll: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=520892

Needing to do and choosing/wanting to do are vastly different things.

MANY people here convince themselves that they NEED to make changes/mods to their basses (myself included) if for no other reason than boredom, curiousity, and excess of money sitting around to fund the changes.

Don't forget the deep down desire to be unique in some way.

No but do you consider what it takes to produce a bass at that pricepoint??

The fact that they buy their paint in an unimaginabley huge bulk, remember its not only SX basses and guitars that come out of that factory, but many brands, maybe even some Squiers, my SX has exactly the same paint as my Squiers, MIM Fender body, and numerous other brands.

Bass Gear Magazine actually visited these factorys, and its not like you want us to believe at all.

I'm not trying to make you believe anything. The average price of an SX is significantly lower than the other brands you mentioned. God only knows what they are capable of doing to cut costs and meet pricepoints. :hmm:

Not running ads in the mags for starters. Not sponsoring artists. Not doing R+D (they just copy others). All they do is build and sell direct. That's it. Simple and cheap to do.

If you plan on being a long term member here, I'd suggest you tone it down with the disrespect. If not, I can all but assure you your stay here will be short lived.

True, I NEED to modify a bassto MY liking... no bass company nor even a luthier would make what I want. You know like a 28 or 30 fret 5 string bass with a tremolo.....mmmmm But i dont have the money
