That bass is as big as he is.

Let's be careful. Fender's MIA quality has varied - this must be noted. 2008 was a good year for instance.
I don't think I've read where a non-modded SX / Essex has been rated higher than a 2008 MIA.
Could one say that a recent SX bass is on par with a 70's Fender? I think that's possible, as Fender was a "hit or miss" proposition back then, as well as other years.
My main point is that with a fret job [mine didn't need it] and perhaps $200 worth of other mods, a SX beats a MIM Fender, provided that you have a good SX. If you don't get shipped a good SX, return it for a better one [use UPS Ground and you have little $$$ to risk].
I've owned SX, MIA and MIM Fenders and a Squier VM. The SX basses that I've owned (both standard and LTD models bought within the past year) have equaled and exceeded the Squier in every respect (I had a Squier Telebass bought in early 2008.) The LTD models equal most MIM Fenders I've played. The SX however, does not equal a MIA Fender in sound quality or build. Even at it's lowest point, I think a MIA Fender is still a notch or two above SX in playability and sound.
Again, this is from my personal experience with specific models of each bass. They may not be representative of the entire line of basses (or maybe they are).
But just because SX basses aren't equal to Fender MIAs does not make them total crap. They are inexpensive basses that cost at least a third and sometimes more than a MIA Fender. Still, they are solid, useable, well put together basses for little money. I would hope the MIA would feel and sound better than an SX for three-times the money. If they don't, why waste your money? It doesn't make sense to spend anywhere from $400 to $1,000 more for a waterslide decal that starts with an "F" instead of an "S."
That fact that people can even make such an argument considering the price differential between an MIA and an SX speaks volumes, don'tcha think?...Even at it's lowest point, I think a MIA Fender is still a notch or two above SX in playability and sound....

I modded to hell a Fender MIM Fretless, changed almost everything, including the neck, because it was not as good as my (later bought) Squier VM Fretless. And the Fender was no slouch.
I was impressed by the MII "vintage" Squier fretless I played that goes for $279
anyone make an attempt at reshaping the bat-thick neck? I don't have an SX but would probably take a swing at a reshape , maybe go for the 59-P wide/flat thing.
It's also unfair to compare a company like Fender -- which has to take marketing, R&D, advertising, tooling, sourcing parts, woods, labor, unions, etc, etc, etc, into its costs --

Here kitty kitty . . .wow, I had never actually heard an SX before this video (though I was planning on ordering one soon) and I'm thoroughly impressed! It sounds pretty darn good, especially for the price. All the more reason for me to get one I guess
.....Who knows, maybe someday I'll order one or get a Fender with a Lakland headstock.
