For you SX haters!!!

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, allegedly:D If anyone felt offended and question my abilities to play a bass, or believe that I would think that because one owns, or have held a $5000 + instrument which might be to inform me of their means too purchase beyond an Essex, or that they understand quality. Sorrry:) Many have said and implied about the quality of an Essex over a Fender MIA, etc. I say no...really not now, not ever. Not the MIA Fender I own no mods goodness out of the box:D . Love your Essex, be proud, be happy but IMO in comparison to a Fender MIA, every day, all day I'm going with the Fender baby:ninja:

Let's be careful. Fender's MIA quality has varied - this must be noted. 2008 was a good year for instance.

I don't think I've read where a non-modded SX / Essex has been rated higher than a 2008 MIA.

Could one say that a recent SX bass is on par with a 70's Fender? I think that's possible, as Fender was a "hit or miss" proposition back then, as well as other years.

My main point is that with a fret job [mine didn't need it] and perhaps $200 worth of other mods, a SX beats a MIM Fender, provided that you have a good SX. If you don't get shipped a good SX, return it for a better one [use UPS Ground and you have little $$$ to risk].

I've tried them all and I'll tell you this in all honesty: I'm 100% convinced that Squier VM's are better basses than Fender MIM's and I've A/B'd several of them lately.

Okay, that makes sense... I have not A/B'd all of these basses so I'll take you at your word.

So, maybe the SX basses ARE on par with the Squier - which seem about right.

Then the question I have is - why aren't the MIM Fenders any better than what they are?

When you "upgrade" from Squier to MIM Fender, are you just paying for the name on the headstock?

No no no, they are built in different overseas factories also.

There is a sea between the US and Mexico right?

Not exactly. When you go from Squier to MIM Fender, you are now getting a bass with the same basic wood configuration as the MIA's. Yes, the MIM line will have more pieces,(also more pieces than an SX) but you get the Alder/maple/rosewood combination, not available on the CV or VM Squiers. I would consider that a major upgrade (required IMO).

So (to get back to the original subject matter), how do MIM fenders and MII Squers compare to the MI??? SX basses?

From what I'm reading, it really depends on the model - but in the SX world, that seems almost silly - if the price range is ~$100 to ~$160, why wouldn't you go large?

I'll have to re-phrase what I have previously said. I DO honestly think that SX basses are better than MIM's. SX and VM Squiers are kind of equal in my book, but SX costs less and are generally lighter than the Jazz Vintage Modified (which I'd buy out of the VM series). I understand that you believe that anything by Fender will be better than an SX bass and I'd probably agree with that if I hadn't owned a Jazz SX. It's clear to me that you haven't ever seen or touched one, and it's hard to understand what data you have to judge or post an opinion on basses that you haven't played. Honestly...

Ah, good point… and I did see your earlier post on wood types too. Good point. Although, I don’t think wood type is everything. I like the way bass wood sounds – I just don’t like the way it dents.

I think it’s important to note that there is a big difference in Maple from piece to piece. More to it than just type of wood and number of pieces. My HWY-1 P bass has a 4 or 5 piece body (very well matched, I used to think it was only 2 pcs) but it is very light weight and highly resonant so it sings quite nicely.

I would love to get a button that has that on it.

I'm exactly like the Riddler...only way different.

Oh, I see... SO.. anyway...

A man walks into a brothel and the madam asks him what he’d like for dinner and what type of lady he’d be interested in spending time with. His reply, “give me a bologna sandwich and a fat girl that doesn’t shave her legs”.
The madam was rather taken aback at such a request, and she replied “sir we have the best chef in town and many beautiful young women who are trained to please you many different ways”.
The man looked her dead in the eye and said “I’m not horny – I’m homesick”.

Now Marty.......don't be dissing my SX for I know where you live

Hope all is well.

Ya, I'm great, quit a band last weekend :( egotistical guitarist/composer dude. You are always welcome to come again and record some music if you like.

IN the latest theUK Bass guitar magazine they have a section called Beginner 'plus bass round up...the one thing I noticed was some said Maple neck or Hard Maple. The Squires use Maple and a low cost bass called Stagg (I've seen them at my local shop) have hard maple...The low cost EDEN neck I purchased the frets rose up and it would go out of tune and my Mighty Might neck is rock solid...

Bwah hahahahahaha!

So they were out of bologna and he wanted to go home and get some.....
I love it.

The SX line happens to be a great value, and that's why it gets discussed so much around here.

It's also why so many of us have had very good experiences with them. ;).

Well put Savit!! +1

I'd venture to say that a large portion of SX buyers are not newbie bass players. I've been playing and gigging for over 30 years.

Experience is knowing what to do, wisdom is knowing what NOT to do. As you get older you may become wiser.
