For you SX haters!!!

Now if Kurt sells the Essex for on average $150 then once you subtract the shipping from China, Kurt's mark up, actually cost of manufacturing. This instrument real cost is somewhere between $35-70 bux. I question all the wood claims they make, the electronics has to be the cheapest and most inferior to be found. Thank JC for the inventions of the CNC machines.

I am sorry for all the people who think an Essex is better than a Fender MIA, they probably never held one in their hands to feel the quality of proper neck and dressed frets.

I remember when Kurt lost distributions rights for Fender gear once GC moved into town. That's when he started distributing Essex basses. And, I played them all in the store then. AND THEY ALL SUCKED. I was tempted like most for you who can't or don't own a proper Fender. Damn those Essex look cool, if only Fender was making all those wild colors, block inlays, etc but that's all they have is looks.

Is there place for and Essex bass... YES in YOUR FIREPLACE:)

FAIL

Times change. I remember when 70's Fenders were looked at as junk.

Anyway, SX / Essex must have improved their QC, as the one I purchased recently is no 2008 MIA [and I don't know anyone here who has made that claim], but is on par with a MIM, which is a much more expensive mod platform.

that would probably sound better than an SX!
Apparently you missed the megathread by JimmyM, where he posted blind links of audio clips of a '79 Jazz and an '07 SX. Guess what, guy... The SX was picked almost 2 to 1 as the better sounding bass. My guess is you've never played or ehard one and are jumping on this bandwagon 'cause you're a n00b. Am I warm?

Here's three of my main players: A completely stock SX, my custom Conklin, and a modded to hell SX. It wasn't uncommon at all for one of the SXs to be the main player for a gig.

The thread started as sarcasm about all the hate towards SX. If you read the OP, it's telling SX haters that I'm ordering mine Friday. I've owned high end basses in the past, Fender, Kramer to name two when I used to play out but that was 1982. Now I just do the P & W thing and I don't need a high end bass for that and I play at the same level no matter what I put my hands on. I don't need a high end bass to stroke my ego anymore.

You guys are right....a decent bass at an extremely affordable price?
Burn them....burn them all!!!!

We should never allow people on fixed incomes or people that are less fortunate have a decent instrument that they can actually afford.

Music is only for the rich and only expensive instruments should be sold.
It's the only way to keep the riff raff out.

You may be surprised to find out, that after my luthier went over the frets on my SX that they are now far nicer than the factory fret jobs that Fender puts out, and I like the factory fretwork on my Fenders as well.
And, I played them all in the store then. AND THEY ALL SUCKED.
Maybe you don't posess the ability or skills to get one of these SX's to play well, or the ability to recognise what needs to be tweaked. Most of us say and agree that they need some set up work to play their best. ;);):D

... and by "propper Fender" you mean Pre CBS right? Uh.. Yeah... I can play the "gear snob" game too guy. ;)

Funny how everyone who's ever played my SX who didn't know how much it cost, thought it was fantastic. AMAZING huh?

My SX is battle tested and proven. Yup, I'll be using it again on tonights show, just like most every other show.. with the MIA Fender as it's backup.
Guess I'm a morron huh? ;)

I'm an electronic engineer, wife's an ADON, I could afford just about anything. I don't need a marqee saying "Hey look at me, I play a (Name your own ego stroker). That means I am great."

I honestly like SAVIT and think aside from the SX controversy stuff he is a cool guy. I'm getting kinda bored with these threads and would rather read about someone building bass guitars or learning theory.

I picked up a bass a few weekends back for $99

I just called my local store and you can buy a Squire affinity bass starting at $180...

I was very dissapointed with the Squiers I tried and think if Fender is going to put their name on a product they should up the quality control when they inspect the imports. First one I grabbed had a bad buzz on the open G string. The Nut was broken at the string and the slot was wide open where any inspector should have seen it. From what I read about Kurt at Rondo, I don't think I'll have to worry about the simple stuff like a broken nut.

Riiiight. See that picture up above? That's a $5,400 bass nested between those two SX basses (prices are on Conklin's website if you are so inclined... I can give you a run down of the options). I could afford an MIA if I wanted one, I assure you. Thing is, I'd much prefer an SX.

Marty, no one is claiming SX is the ONLY option. Yes, there ae plenty of other deals/bargains out there as well.
See the Squier VM , CV threads for lots of discussion on those.

The SX line happens to be a great value, and that's why it gets discussed so much around here.

It's also why so many of us have had very good experiences with them. ;)

As I said in a previous thread... If you don't want to read the SX threads, don't click on them. Works every time you try it. ;)

Marty, would you tollerate people calling your Ibanez or Markbass equipment "Firewood" "Junk" or liken it to a cardboard box without any commentary? I highly doubt it.

P.S. I'd rather watch paint dry, or snow melt than read about theory. :) Just sayin'.

He said SX... not Fender MIA or EBMM. ;)

FYI, my comment was based on my experience, not as a "hater" who spews opinion based on what they read rather than real experience. I own an SX and my experience with both the quality of the bass and my experience trying to work it out with Curt at Rondo were both unsatisfying. Sure, there are a lot of people who've had very different experiences with SX/Rondo, but if they're free to speak about their great experiences then I'm just as free to speak about my bad one. And as I've said in every other thread where I voiced my SX opinion, my opinion of SX is not completely negative. I do happen to like the tone of my SX. Quite a lot, actually.

For what it's worth, I also have some experience with MIA Fenders and EBMM and my opinion of them is quite different. I have owned two of each, still own three of those four basses, and have been quite happy with their build quality and sound. All were bought used so I can't comment on customer service.

Yes, I realize my Rondo cost a lot less then my Fenders and EBMMs (and my MIM Fender, and my Lakland, and my Ibanez, and my ESP) and it would be silly to expect them to be as good as any of them have been. And I honestly *didn't* expect it to be in their league. However, I don't think it was unreasonable for me to expect a properly constructed bass or to be able to work out a return for a model that was didn't have the construction problem mine has. That's what my opinion is based on, not "They're so inexpensive so they must suck and I'm too stuck up and insecure to ever be seen in public with so lowly an instrument".

My SX came yesterday. I bought the white one that cost $100. The SX sounds and plays just fine.
I have a number of other electric basses that cost a lot more. As an added bonus, THERE'S NO DEAD SPOT, like my Fenders and G&L have developed.
I'll be gigging with it tonight. One gig paid for it!
If someone were to come up to me at break and mention the inferiority of an SX bass, I'd gently remind them that I'm the one who has the gig that night. But I don't expect that to happen.
I'm looking forward to a long and beautiful relationship with the SX line.

Behringer needs to start making basses. I can't imagine the flak they would get here on TB!
Oh lord... They would be junk, however!

Welcome to the club! :)

I really think that all the SX hate really comes down to gear snobbery IMO. Like others here have stated people who usually talk bad about SX are usually people who have never even put their hands on one. More than likely if that SX headstock were to say Fender on there, they would overlook any minor flaws or issues found in said bass just because they have a "proper fender" IMO. I don't own a lot of gear myself at the moment, but have owned my share of basses at different price points ranging from $100 to $1800. Right now the only two basses I own are a Lakland 55-02 and an SX Jazz bass. Fit, finish, construction, quality and so on are not on par with the lakland or the other mid- low high end basses i've owned, and it shouldn't be for the measly $120, but it sounds good and is just as playable as any other bass i've played.

All this reminds me of that old adage about why some men buy expensive sports cars. " I think he's trying to compensate for something" ;) Maybe some of the so called gear snobs buy expensive basses to compensate for lack of skill. :hiding:
Personally I find just as much enjoyment in making music with my cheap SX as I do in my Lakland. She aint as pretty and well dressed as my 55-02 though :bassist: but she will do.
