For you SX haters!!!

I honestly like SAVIT and think aside from the SX controversy stuff he is a cool guy. I'm getting kinda bored with these threads and would rather read about someone building bass guitars or learning theory.

I picked up a bass a few weekends back for $99

[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

I just called my local store and you can buy a Squire affinity bass starting at $180...
I hope you all realize I was being sarcastic.

Other than some new strings, my sx will only be getting cosmetic mods. and not that it needed any, they just didn't have the color I originally wanted and i got a screaming deal on a blocked/bound neck when i bought the bass. by the time I have it all finished, i'm looking at a pretty cheap, sexy, workhorse of a bass.

bass-$99
neck-$25
strings-$20
nut-$10
paint-$5
covers-$20

total invested-$185 ish and its MY bass, not a run off the production just like every other bass i see. doesn't get much more custom then exactically what i want...

and the first time I played her in public, the first thing anyone said was, "Listen to that F****r sound!" This from a guy who has been playing music longer than I have been alive and hosts the local jam nights. He knows his stuff.

I’m still reading the thread, so far I’ve only made it to page 4 and all I’m seeing is flames… so I’m going to break from that trend and reply to the OP.

I would caution against the “sharp quilted wood grain 4 string jazzes”.

Make sure that you are aware that this is FAKE “sharp quilted wood”. It is a photo of real nice wood made into a sticker that covers the top.

I have purchased an SX P base with “photo flame” and I thought it looked good in the picture. I thought it looked awful in person. This my opinion based on my experience.

It is my opinion that you will get a more passable finish if you shy away from the “fancy” options at this very inexpensive price point.

As far as SX in general – I have purchased two. One impressed me, another disappointed me. It can be “hit and miss” at this price point. My least favorite part of a stock SX is the press on plastic knobs that tend to pop off at every opportunity.

Of course, IMHO, YMMV, etc, etc…

I just want to add that my SX is a damn' fine instrument. And not "for the price" it is *just* a damn fine instrument. Every musician I have played with has loved it too. Oh, and as for the "don't know what a good(expensive, I assume:rolleyes:) instrument is like, here is my SX next to my very fave axe a USA Fender Roscoe Beck. My SX is actually one of my faves too, btw.

Yeah you're right, the quilted top is a "photo finish":

But on another model, they say the flame top is real:

I prefer solid colors anyway.

I had the red photoflame finish on an SX jazz a few years back and it was actually pretty nice looking. I picked it out at the store, but most of them were solid colors.

I have the newer blue flame finish on order, I'll post pics when it arrives.

I purchased the SX BG-205 about five years ago and as far as I can tell, it is actually a copy of an Ibanez bass:

i had no idea it was an ibanez copy? i have that one too, as a fretless. it's real nice, i get compliments on it all the time. and it's getting some bartolinis in it next week! i actually have played many more gigs with that bass than any other of mine. it's kickin for jazz stuff.

Most of the "players" I know who have expensive or "botique"basses have very few gigs!

I've owned lots of basses over the years & my SX is fine. She gets played a lot & I've had no complaints from any of the various people I play with.Every now & then a smart ass comes over to tell me about the bass he owns that costs some major sum. I play once a month in a houseband with a couple of guys who are starting to do real well for themselves. These guys have mondo cool vintage gear & they like the sound of my SX.This gig also brings out the poseurs & gear snobs . Some of that bunch think my SX is some custom made instrument.

I have other basses & I bought the SX because it was cheap.
In certain rooms the SX is my first call.

Over the years,I have heard the same mud thrown at Ibanez,Fernandes,Cort,Aria',Danelectro & Peavey. If it's low cost how can it be any good?

I'm getting another SX soon!

Interesting thread...

I, myself, have and play pretty high-end instruments, but I can certainly see the appeal of something that is just plain affordable and does the job - and I think that with the economy doing what it's doing, practical choices like SX basses will get more popular rather than less. From the posts on TB, it's pretty clear that they are at least serviceable and some folks appear to really like them, so it's not like their pressboard garbage, right?

Heck, I just recommended an SX to a friend who wants to start playing but doesn't want to spend big bux. If he buys it, i'll set it up for him and provided it's not a total POS, he'll be good to go.

I just don't get why the hostility about these basses. I don't see this type of hostility toward MII Fenders/Squiers....

Well, I'm not certain, I have only guessed, but it appears to be their attempt at an Ibanez SR-505 or similar Ibanez bass:

Barts?! Wow, I have really wanted to do something similar for some time. Make a thread or send me a PM if you can remember to let me know how it sounds after throwing the Barts in there!
