For you SX haters!!!

Well, I'm not certain, I have only guessed, but it appears to be their attempt at an Ibanez SR-505 or similar Ibanez bass:

wow. i never thought of it but it really does look like a soundgear. funny. i have 2 ibanez basses, and evidently a sort of ibanez copy- i guess i really am an ibanez guy.

as soon as i get those new pickups in there i will post a thread, with some before/after clips. I just scored a great deal in the classifieds here, so next week sometime I hope to be playing a much better sounding fretless. the stock pickups are real muddy, especially on the low B.

Yes, some are...

I used to own a SJB-75 that had a normal Fender'ish maple color. I guess the cheaper ones get the stained coat.

Mine is one of the cheapest models, yet is plain clearcoat.

Maybe its done on some to make 'em look more vintage, if so its not worked....

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, allegedly:D If anyone felt offended and question my abilities to play a bass, or believe that I would think that because one owns, or have held a $5000 + instrument which might be to inform me of their means too purchase beyond an Essex, or that they understand quality. Sorrry:) Many have said and implied about the quality of an Essex over a Fender MIA, etc. I say no...really not now, not ever. Not the MIA Fender I own no mods goodness out of the box:D . Love your Essex, be proud, be happy but IMO in comparison to a Fender MIA, every day, all day I'm going with the Fender baby:ninja:

Although i am not the biggest SX fan in the world i am not an Hater of them. I owned two and one was nice one a dud. Rondo has great CS and i feel a decent product for the money. I prefer Fenders over them and have expressed my reasons why all to offen here on TB and wont again.... I like Fenders better period. I still might pick up a SX P/J or parts to build my own soon. They are what they are and me being a budget basser would never say they are firewood.

Is the maple on the SX necks and headstocks as yellowed as it looks in the photos on the website.

The neck and headstock on mine has a pretty deep orangey-yellow tint to it, but it doesn't bother me. Actually, for a $129 bass I don't think it looks bad at all. There's a construction issue that's bothered me, but I've already talked about that. ;)

I haven't been followin' this thread all the way. I read some posts here and there. I did just get a SX SPB62. I once had a 03 American Standard Fender PBass. I like the SX better. Maybe it's the strings? I like GHS flatwounds. The Fender had Fender flatwounds and it just sounded too dead to me. Myabe I'm not that experienced to tell the difference in quality.

I choose my SX over the Fender. I sold the Fender for $675 and paid $125 for the SX...

All the SX needs is a tort guard.

And that's all I can say about this thread.

Do you really think your first post wasn't offensive or condiscending?

Yes, I have said many times that my lightly modded SX gives up nothing in playabilty and sound (actaully the SX with the Jason Lollar p/u sounds better) to my MIA Fender, and very little to my Pre CBS Precision. I stand solid behind that statement every time I play a show, and the MIA Fender is my backup to the SX. They are both great basses, however the SX is the one I grab 99% of the time for main gig duties. It also always goes into the studio with me along with the 64 Precision.

It's wonderful that you dig your Fender, but I'll tell you right now, calling the basses that a lot of us here use quite effectively "Firewood" (your words) is bound to get a strongly worded response.

My SX and my MIM look almost exactly the same except the SX is a five-string with a bit thicker neck. The stain color/clear coat looks practically identical on both basses. If the SX is yellow, then the MIM is yellow.

Like I stated earlier, there are really only two differences: Sound and Weight.

IMO, the SX sounds better than the MIM. The SX is warmer and richer than the MIM. The MIM sounds dull and lifeless by comparison.

The SX weighs more than the MIM.

If you could judge a bass as better because it is lighter, than the MIM would win hands down.

Otherwise, the SX beats the MIM in almost every way -- IMHO. :)

I picked up a bass a few weekends back for $99

I just called my local store and you can buy a Squire affinity bass starting at $180...

I happened to play one of those Beanies last summer when I jammed with a fellow bass player in London (Ont). He had just picked it up that day. Fun bass to play.

Now Marty.......don't be dissing my SX for I know where you live :ninja:

Hope all is well.

have you tried a Squier lately? The VM series are very nice. What it is it about the SX that makes you think it's on par with a MIM Fender, and therefore "better" than a Squier.

Well right off the bat, the VM and CV Squiers are Basswood, Agathis, Soft Maple or some other substitute wood where as the SX line uses Alder and Ash. The same tonewoods as a propper Fender.

I'll say that the Squiers are nice IMO, but as long as they are using those tonewoods, I'll be picking the SX every time, as it's basic construction is the same as a propper vintage Fender. Add to the mix that the Squiers are nearly two to three times more money, and it's a no brainer. (required IMO) ;)

I've tried them all and I'll tell you this in all honesty: I'm 100% convinced that Squier VM's are better basses than Fender MIM's and I've A/B'd several of them lately.

So (to get back to the original subject matter), how do MIM fenders and MII Squers compare to the MI??? SX basses?

From what I'm reading, it really depends on the model - but in the SX world, that seems almost silly - if the price range is ~$100 to ~$160, why wouldn't you go large?

I modded to hell a Fender MIM Fretless, changed almost everything, including the neck, because it was not as good as my (later bought) Squier VM Fretless. And the Fender was no slouch.
