For you SX haters!!!

OK. You said "may".

Your post I referred to is garbage nonetheless.

Hope u got it all out, now breathe, there we go big fella feel better now. I don't want you to strain from heavy lifting dem there big'em words. If "garbage" be it on one side and U be it on the other...choices, choices... I'll go with the gabage it smells a whole lot better:cool: Thank you:D I'll take it as a complement coming from whomever U be;)

Ditto~! There are just as many boutiques as any other that are in just as much need of rework, whether by need or desire by the owners. Everyone is looking for some mysterious tone that they won't get until they return to the TRUE bass tone, i.e.: UB

I remember something about the Revlon cosmetics guy saying that he didn't sell cosmetics, he sold hope...

;)

Perhaps if you have spent 2-3-4 times as much, you have trouble handling the truth that SX is better, no?

To some degree I can see that.

But I also think that there's a different market niche were talking about.

I'm not buying SX basses because they're an "investment" to me. I know it's not going to hold its value. I know it's simply sinking money into a hole where I'll never see it again. They're never going to accrue in value or become an investment. They don't have a history, a legacy or get played by a famous person who will have a signature model that's double the price.

I AM buying SX because it's a quality copy of an instrument that has all the qualities of the above but without the name. I'm buying because I can take them out and gig them out and mod them without worry of devaluing and get a great sound out of it for a fraction of the price of Fender, etc.

That fact that people can even make such an argument considering the price differential between an MIA and an SX speaks volumes, don'tcha think? :p

It shows where SX is looking to be poised.

They make a great bass. Like any other bass produced en masse there are going to be issues. I've gotten two clunkers. But I also have a 5 string Jazz that's just amazing, not for the price but an amazing bass that I look forward to owning and playing and wearing in and enjoying for very many years to come.

I have my "investment" gear. But I also have my working gear. And for $150 or so I can play a handfull of gigs and the bass will have paid for itself and probably made up for any depreciation between new and used.

Oh, how I love the wonderful idea that anytime you have disagreement/issue/difference of opinion on a subject these days with a certain age group you're branded a "hater"...

Fact is, I'm not a fan of SX basses - not because of their price (or more clearly their lack thereof), quality of wood/pickups/hardware/Quality Control, but that the vast majority of owners I've spoken to and heard from have done at least some modifications to them. And a great deal of them not to improve on the bass primarily like the modding community, but to make them simply playable which I think defeats the whole purpose of their price-point, especially when "Beginner Basses" such as Squires, Ibanez, Yamaha and others have risen the bar tremendously compared to the near-unplayable "Pro Session" P-bass copy I started on... and not in the '60s or '70s, but 1989. I simply think there is much better around what they sell for, and that every year the competition increases.

I'm ordering Friday but can't decide on the black jazz 5 string to do a 5 string Geddy look or one of those sharp quilted wood grain 4 string jazzes. I just keep looking at both of them and can't decide!!!

Personally I'd stay clear of both. The finish I had on my maple SX neck was a sort of bright orange 'fake tan' varnish stain which looked awful, and I'm not a fan of photo tops.

The neck with the maple board and block inlays has a much lighter finish and looks a lot more natural.

If it's going to be a 5 string I'd seriously consider this one Link Removed

For the money, SX are very good basses once you've done a simple set up and smoothed off a few sharp frets, but as it is with almost any bass, YMMV when you take it out of the box.

Look, the SX is the best d*** bass I have ever owned! I might dare say its the best bass in the world... And I am pretty much the authority on all things bass now, because I have been playing for two whole weeks!!!! :bassist:

I mean, when I stopped hitting it with the drum sticks and started using my fingers it sounded like an angels voice!!!

I pounded the skins off and on for 10 years or so, but I get moved around so much with work, moving my drums around is getting to be a huge hassle. Back in high school my buddy taught me some scales on his Ibanez and I had fun with it, so I decided to pick me up a bass. I got my SX for my first bass 2 weeks ago and I am loving it.

Honestly, the biggest draw for me to the SX was this little deal right Link Removed I didn't want to sink a bunch of money into gear since I dont even know how to play, and I got the whole package for $100 less than a Squire or Ibanez bass by itself. In fact, they dont even make left handed starter packs. And the Lake Placid Blue is a gorgeous finish. Not at all like the deep blue they show, which made me a little mad at first when I opened it, but now I think its just gorgeous. Its a metallic aqua-marine type color and I love it.

Apparently you aren't aware of all of the expensive basses that suffer from the same issues of playability as the SX basses.
I wish I had a dollar for every expensive name brand bass I've ever picked up in a store that had massive playability issues and I'm not just talking about a bad setup. Not to mention basic quality control issues.

I dont hate SX basses, I do find it annoying when people start spouting how they're better than Fenders, Laklands, MMs, Sadowskys, etc, etc, etc... It's flat out ridiculous.

My sons Squier is flat out nicer to play & sounds better than his SX. But, they ARE a good value. If you're lookin to play something, that only costs a tank of gas (or 2), then pick one up.... As cheap as they are, you'd have to be crazy NOT to.

If you plan on being a long term member here, I'd suggest you tone it down with the disrespect. If not, I can all but assure you your stay here will be short lived.

Well I'm sorry, I am not paying $659 for a fender mexican bass or $300 for an imported squier. They ARE in the same league with SX, they feel, play and sound the same and no matter what you do, right after you get one you start talkiing about modding it.

So whats the point in laying out all that cash for something that is only a minor, no...very minor, detail away from being the same on par with an SX?

You want to be sucked in by the big corporate fender monster go right ahead. I know when I bought my first squier 5 string jazz I was all revved up about it until I realized that people looked down on squiers, so I sold it and bought a MIM, then I realized those players with real fenders looked down on it......the BS never ends, there is always something out there that is perceptively better.

Go buy a MIM or a squier and I guarrantee that it will automatically lose its value after they swipe your credit card.

I say stop worrying about the headstock and start groovin...

You can count one person who owns and plays an SX that has really done nothing but set it up and played it.

I'm not a modder when it comes to basses....they either have "it" or they don't. If they don't they don't stick around long.

I know that this thread has become a joke, and waaay off topic part of the time to boot, and a flamers paradice and such. But, I'll throw in another two-cents:

I have been playing bass for twenty years; I am by no means an expert, but I am by no means an unexperiences player.

I have an SX, and it did not need serious modifications in order to be playable. I know this is the point of many arguments against SX. I had to do a simple set-up on my SX when I pulled it out of the box. I tweaked a few nuts and screws, and that was that. After that, it sounded and played better than my $700 MIM Fender.

Rondo doesn't sell the black bass with a block inlay neck so I plan on changing that out to make a Geddy Lee look alike.

That was also my initial experience with SX. My guitar player bought and SX SPB 62 for his son, after a recomendation from some players on a different guitar related board. He had it shipped to my house, so I could give it a once over before he gave it to his son. Gave it a basic set up and it was good to go. I was so impressed with what I saw, that I ordered an SPB 62 for myself.

No upgrades were needed on either bass to be giggable.
Yes, I did some tweaks to get the exact sound( I wanted a more early/mid 60's P tone) , and playability out of it that I desired, but I did it a little at a time, while gigging it all the while.

After less than a year serving as a backup to my old Fender, the SX took over the no.1 spot for live work where it remains to this day.

+1 - I am also an SX owner who hasn't done any mods to my SX BG-205 other than a setup and who loves the way it plays and sounds.

So there is two.
