I always wanted to play the drums when I was a kid. Some friends and I wanted to start a band however my folks put an end to the drumming idea due to cost...and also the idea of sheer noise I am sure ha ha. However back in 1997 they did eventually give in and helped me buy an electric guitar and amp. Then a couple years later I picked up bass as well so something good did come of my once thought drummer dreams.
Every bass player—nay, every musician—should start with drums and a metronome.
That's a great way to develop rhythm and musicality. Just don't let him drive the van. Never let the drummer drive!

Rumour has it that Nicko declined the invitation to appear on the show, but his son found out and threatened never to speak to him again.
Fear not! My (now 30) son didn't take to my attempts to interest him in stringed instruments -- but he developed a love for drums. We now get to play together in a variety of bands and projects, and I can't think of a greater blessing! (ps. he's a good drummer!)
10+ years later and this guy's still playing drums. Not all of us are called to be bassists.

I feel your pain....
My son is an accomplished drummer. Started when he was 5 as well.
He grew up in our rehearsal room and was almost immediately attracted to the drum kit. Our drummer encouraged his fascination so he's at least partially to blame!
If he sticks with them, you'll have to get a van to haul his gear around..
Should of bought him a harmonica..........

The world always needs (and will sometimes even pay) drummers who can reliably keep solid time, hold down a funky pocket, come out of a roll on the one, show up on time (read: early) for setup, and maintain societally acceptable standards of personal hygiene.
In other words, you've handed yourself a considerable parenting challenge. I'm sure you'll be equal to the task. Keep us posted.

I started at 6 as a drummer, wanting to grow up and be Ringo. An excellent foundation in many ways. Then, I've been in Beatles tributes, so I guess I grew up to be Paul.

At least it's still a musical instrument of some kind; he could have wanted to be a rapper or something...
Raising a drummer is a good long term investment. He will grow to be big and strong and, eventually, he will be able to help you out hauling your bass gear. Drummers are the best helping hand for any bass player.
