I forgot about the two floor toms. He was 3 when he got his kit he asked nicely "is there a 2nd floor tom? I figured any kid that wanted two floor toms, I'd see what I could do. I found a 10x12 for $20 and put some legs I had laying around on it

Not a Kala. A Rondo. We had just found out he was left handed. My brother and I made a body for a 3yo, barely enough wood to hold the neck bridge and strap button
I started the little guy on drums in August 2019 and it has brought the brothers closer together and is making them into pretty decent musicians...
I got him started early - I didn't put this out there for years since he was just wearing a diaper but - he's quite a bit older now.
Where he got that little cymbal flourish at the end at that age I dunno.

Any music that you get him interested in is a good thing. We may not like to admit it, but the world needs drummers too. And you’re a good dad for fostering his interest.
No I'm not Catholic. But I did go against all that should be good and holy today by purchasing and putting together a drum set for my (almost) 5 year old son. I could feel all of the bass playing communitie's collective disappointment course through me with every turn of the drum key.
Really though he seems to really want to try hard to play my basses or guitars (he hikes my Mustang PJ on his lap all the time) but at his age it's just not possible to do a stringed instrument and he's been asking for a drum set forever. In the end I figured not squashing his musical interests was more important than not allowing him to make me regret this decision for years to come.
Excuse me - I feel dirty and need to play some bass to forget about what I've done!
Not everyone can have a musical talented progeny some have drummers.

Buying your kid a drum kit isn't even close to committing a sin... don't be so hard on yourself! What's the number one thing we bass players love more than anything in the world... PLAYING WITH A GOOD DRUMMER that's what!! Besides, at age four he's not even close to being able to play an instrument, unless he's some kind of prodigy or something.No I'm not Catholic. My youngest son started playing drums when he was 2. There was no stopping him. He started formal lessons just before his 5th birthday. Now he plays flute and piano, too.
Here he is almost a year ago when he was 11.
He’s made a lot of progress in the last year. I’ll have to post up something more recent. Anyhow, my motto is “exposure and encouragement”, especially for young kids. The don’t have to be good so long as they’re having fun and freely exploring their talents. Let the skill come naturally over time.

Our first kit was some $100 First Act disaster from Sam’s Club. Came with a little kick, a floor tom, a mounted tom, snare, a stool, sticks, and round metal plates. As bad as it was, it served its purpose for years before we upgraded.I just bought this one from Amazon. I've never put together drums and it was pretty easy. I haven't tuned them at all but they're surprisingly loud for a small set
I think Guitar Center has a smaller set for the same price by SPL with fewer drums but may be a little higher quality. I grabbed this to give him a couple more things to hit and it had pretty positive reviews. The only really cheap feeling thing is the kick and hihat pedals but for the price they function well and I didn't expect too much.

Now you guys could play together! IME, learning the drums at such a tender age will embed rhythm in his soul and it will become part of his DNA. He'll pick up other instruments as he gets older. My nephew fell in love with the drums when my wife and I got married. He was 3 and everyone encouraged him to pursue music... he's be 16 in October... plays drums at jams with people 3x and 4x his age... He used to sing but has lost interest as his voice was changing (we still encourage hime to sing). Now he's learning guitar, pretty quickly. He loves playing with his uncle (me), and I love playing with him.

Your sin was not buying him a kit sooner.
But now, you've turned over a new chapter in your life, and your redemption can begin.
Ha! She's been supportive of it, especially since she has very little music interest (she plays a little piano but music just doesn't speak to her like it does a lot of us). She also sees my son and I bonding through our love for music and doesn't want to squash that in him.
It also helps we live on an acreage and have a large 2 story with a basement - he's been quarantined to the far corner of the basement
