No I'm not Catholic. But I did go against all that should be good and holy today by purchasing and putting together a drum set for my (almost) 5 year old son. I could feel all of the bass playing communitie's collective disappointment course through me with every turn of the drum key.

Really though he seems to really want to try hard to play my basses or guitars (he hikes my Mustang PJ on his lap all the time) but at his age it's just not possible to do a stringed instrument and he's been asking for a drum set forever. In the end I figured not squashing his musical interests was more important than not allowing him to make me regret this decision for years to come.

Excuse me - I feel dirty and need to play some bass to forget about what I've done!

What is the setup? I really want to do this for my daughter when she turns 4.

I just bought this one from Amazon. I've never put together drums and it was pretty easy. I haven't tuned them at all but they're surprisingly loud for a small set
I think Guitar Center has a smaller set for the same price by SPL with fewer drums but may be a little higher quality. I grabbed this to give him a couple more things to hit and it had pretty positive reviews. The only really cheap feeling thing is the kick and hihat pedals but for the price they function well and I didn't expect too much.

What's the point of having two bass players in the house? I'm primarily a guitar player and I was over the moon ecstatic when my son expressed interest in the bass. So what do you do when your 3yo wants a bass? U-bass!!!

Here's his drum kit - I've put a few splurges in - the 10" snare was a $65 blowout Gretsch. The hat stand was $30 off craigslist. But flying the snare off the hat stand was the best one - it really allows you to bring the pedals in close enough for a little kid. If you have a 3 leg snare stand, it typically spreads the legs painfully far for a kid under about 7 or 8.

I bought my nephew a set of Great Highland Pipes when he was younger... (my sister in law is not my favorite person)

I started my grandaughter on drums last year, just a starter set but she took to it at 4, and for her 6th birthday I'm getting her a better set.

I've already got her playing single notes in time on a short scale of mine.

Drumming is an excellent intro to any instrument, most especially bass because if sone correctly, the timing is there, which makes learning bass easier.

I actually have great respect for good drummers... especially when working with one, makes what I do easier and enjoyable.

I did the same for my son at that age. He's 13 now and playing percussion in band, studying piano, and loves playing guitar and bass.

Getting him a drum kit is totally cool. But it’s this part I want to talk about. Five is not too young for a stringed instrument. Suzuki method teachers will take guitar students from age four (and violin students from age three).

When I was five I wanted to play the guitar. My parents said I had to learn piano first, so I did, and that has been really valuable, but I can’t help think how much more engaged I might have been and how much ei might have practiced if it had been my first choice instrument.

I think you have given your son a great start in music. Extra points for doing it early. I would provide drum lessons so he doesn't pick up the bad habits you see with amateurs.

All music starts with rhythm. Jaco started on drums. Micheal Brecker played drums and it showed in his playing too. Most musicians I know that have decent drum skills are excellent on their main instrument.

Plan to spring for a keyboard in a year.

None of my kids showed any interest in bass .
Even bought my youngest guy a starter kit nothing, played trumpet in middle school
My older guy joined band in school, so I was hopeful he went for drums middle school through high school
My daughter last hope, no instrument just Musical theater
So yeah that's it only had 3 kids I'm done.

Word, yeah that's a lot of kit for the price.
