I've always thought of parents that buy their youngsters a drum set as selfless, hard of hearing, masochistic, or a combination of all of those traits :) And they probably have a detached garage.

Seriously, good on you... It's a hard instrument to get started on early unless the parent(s) are on board :thumbsup: And what bassist wouldn't eventually benefit from having a drummer in the house?

That was a totally awesome dad move, your kid is lucky. There was nothing wrong and everything right about what you did. :hyper: Except posting that a 5 yr old has been asking for something "forever".:roflmao:

Smart move. Playing bass is always more fun when there's a drummer in the house.

I started my son on piano lessons when he was about that age. (5 or 6) He had a GREAT teacher who made it fun. That coupled with his talent has made him an awesome keyboard player as an adult. When he got to middle school (4th grade) and was asked what band instrument he wanted to play, I suggested drums. My theory at the time was; he already knows bass and treble clef and how to read both so a rhythm background would be good. His school music teachers were a bit upset (percussion is where they like to stick the kids with "lesser talents") but we forged ahead and he got a drum set that Christmas. We now have a basement full of musical instruments, my son plays keyboards with a local band, and is also teaching himself guitar and bass and whatever else grabs his attention. He's using my p-bass to learn on, but I have plenty of others. He's a bad man in his own right. GREAT idea to start them young and let them learn to love music in general as they learn WHATEVER instrument they choose. I'm a firm believer in music helping a child's brain to develop and helping them do good in school. My son just graduated Summa Cum Laude from R.I.T. with a major in software engineering and minors in computer science and music and technology. The collection of musical "stuff" we've amassed over the years is huge and we have a lot of fun together jamming. Sounds like you've given your son a great start.

I was very much into drums as a five year-old and my parents would've obliged bar, as I later found out, money issues at the time. Fast-forward thirty (one, sheesh) years later, I can't get enough of 'em P-burst-tort-flats FSOs. Some may say I took a wrong turn somewhere but I can't really hear them over that awesome thump that my basses make.

My oldest wants to play guitar. I got him the jr Squier starter kit in his favorite color red. My youngest wants to play drums. I got him the Ludwig jr kit in his favorite color blue. Neither of them can really play yet, but we bang around on them and have fun learning. I just thank the good lord neither wants to be a lead singer. They got enough attitude already.

why would we be disappointed? A few of the best bass players I've met were also pretty good drummers, it certainly helps if you understand drums when you play bass and viceversa. I think it's a great idea! :)

I consider myself a mediocre bassist at best, the fact that I can sing and play is definitely a plus.

But one thing I think has helped me more than anything else as a bassist is the fact that I was first a drummer. For 16 years I played only drums and my first few years of bands and gigging was behind the kit. Those years instilled in me a great sense of timing and tempo that I think I rely on all the time. It's a great skill to have and may just keep your son interested in music rather than get disappointed because he can't play the stringed instruments yet. You did a good thing for him.

And a good long shower should be enough to rinse off the stain on your own soul :smug:
