Formatting External HP HD for Mac

so i am trying to formatting a 1tb HP external HD for my MacBook. I think i did everything correctly, but nothing is happening.
What i did:
disc utilities->
clicked on the HD->
selected ms-dos volume format->
clicked erase->
clicked erase in pop up

so everything looks okay, but the Partitioning bar isn't moving, not is the Total Capacity GB (Bytes).

should i wait it out? any suggestions?

I agree, if you don't have a specific reason for formatting as ms-dos, format it as hfs+.

Under MS-DOS, the file allocation table (FAT) can't support large partitions. That is most likely the problem.

This is correct ^^

I did it the other day except I had my Mac formatted drive partitioned into two drives, one FAT and the other I left formatted for Mac so my Windows buddies could access the FAT partition
