Found a $240 Mesa head at a local pawn shop...

It was the Walkabout head in pretty good cosmetic condition and I snagged it because the price was so good. I didn't bother playing it beforehand because I figured they must have already checked it out before selling, and in any case they have a no-questions-asked return policy.

So I plugged it in and there's a major problem - the master volume pot is EXTREMELY scratchy. As in - I barely touch it, even at very low volume, and LOUD, HUGE booming static comes through my cab. Scared me half to death, and for a second I thought I might have blown my cab. I get this problem even when no bass is plugged in...at first I thought it was feedback.

Anyway, does this signify major damage to head, or is it a common and easily fixable problem? I wanted to re-sell this head and make a tidy profit, but I'm thinking that it will be more trouble than it's worth to take it to a tech.

Any ideas?

I'd take it back to the pawn shop and ask for at least $50 off because of the problem. I'd then replace the pot for $5 and enjoy the amp. That's if it's just the pot. And you know Mesa has a 5 year transferable warranty, maybe yours is still covered, wouldn't hurt to call Mesa with the serial number...

Sounds like a scratchy pot. There is a spray you can get to clean it up..very minor problem.. Sounds like the Gods where smiling on you. Good score.

stu - it wouldn't be worth the trouble! i already paid $250 for it. you're asking me to break even.

i guess i'll try to get it fixed. i was pretty impressed by how loud the thing was...
