GE, I...uh, lost my dog. Could you work your magic and say, get me a Lakland? That would make me feel so much better about Spike :) Seriously, all joking aside, bravo guys ! I got in late on the thread and hate I missed the contribution side of things. But am subscribed from here on out, so if I can help ...

I've been following this thread for a while now, and it really is amazing.

It inspired me to do something nice. I've had a couple snare drums listed on a local classifieds site and I haven't had very many calls. So yesterday, a kid calls me about the older snare that I had listed. I could tell he was very young about 13 or 14 years old. He told me that he had just started beginning band and he needed a snare drum to practice at home. I'm supposed to meet him today, and I've decided that I'm just going to give him the drum. It's not worth a lot, but to him it will make a world of difference.

About 2 years ago I put together a guitar from parts lying around, did a bit of paint touch up to make it look nicer and then gave it to a friend to give to her 13 year old daughter who wanted to graduate beyond her starter acoustic.

She was on Welfare and couldn't afford much for her kids for Xmas, so I gave her that to put under the tree too.

I'm no musician, but after reading this thread, I've decided that if I have to learn to play bass in order to hang around you guys, I'll do just that. This thread ROCKS. Thanks, Steelpulz, for bringing it to LGM's attention.

Sign me up for a lesson or two! LOL

I didn't 'give' something away but I did lend a 16 year old fledgling bassist my prized Kubicki (great starter bass if you can afford one!) for about 3-4 years to get him playing.

He was dithering back and forth between guitar & bass and I thought I'd help to try and convert him to the low side of the tracks.

It came back a little 'worn' around the edges and he'd somehow lost one of the controls but he went on to become a fine bass player and it never bothered me that he'd given the bass a hard time as I knew he'd been really 'playing' it :)

We became firm friends as well - which was slightly odd given that I was easily old enough to be his father. Spent many an hour discussing obscure music stuff. He really got me into a lot more rockier stuff like Lenny Kravitz & Aerosmith whilst I got him interested in classic soul like Stevie Wonder & the Four Tops - also surprised him with some rockier old (for him) blues stuff from Johnny Winter and Rick Derringer.

I also spent a fair bit of time helping to teach him how to set up a decent PA and do some sound engineering.

He went away to play professionally on the leisure club circuit for a while and now plays in at least two bands and goes out solo with backing tracks and a guitar and sings in various local bars.

Only irritating thing is that he shot past me technically and is now a much better player than I am, lol.

awesome post. whatever happens , this has cheered me up no end. there is so much doom and gloom reported, this should be shown in schools colleges and clubs and bars what can be done with a little thought and time.
