4's are every where in Seattle. In fact I don't think I've gone to or played a local show yet that I've seen another 5 0r 6 string player. Seattle is hipster heaven so lots of Pbasses and Jaguars.

Today's hype (that I am a part of) is all about more strings, but they'll never be phased out entirely. I suspect in the next 10 years, we'll see a wave of 2- and 3-string basses for the bassists who don't even need four.
Seems like it to me. I can't say if they'll ever go "extinct" but I don't see anyone playing them around where I live. And beyond that it seems like most custom builders are building many more fives than fours. What say you, TB?
Is it possible that some people like 5's and 6's because of the string spacing, not necessarily because of the extra strings?
Thrill-House said:One of the big reasons i bought a 6 is because i like the wide fretboards that come with them. I find 4 strings uncomfortable sometimes because of how narrow the fretboards can be.
Here in the Baltimore-Washington DC-northern Virginia megalopolis, I see lots of five and six string basses out on gigs, even a seven in one or two cases. Fours are the majority, but at a rate of 6 or maybe 7 in 10.
I think a number of four stringers (and I'm not referring specifically to you) are being overly defensive.
Personally, I think it's because of the comments like, "they're afraid of the low B", "4 is for starters" and so on, that make four strings players defensive about their choice of bass.
I used to switch between 4 and 5. They didn't make that much difference to me, playability wise.
But right now, I play exclusively 4. But. I'll be switching to a 5 when the time comes.
Actually I'm on a hunt for a not-so-expensive fretless 5 now.
1) Those comments are in the minority.
2) People got defensive before those were posted. Check out the first few pages, lol.
As far as not-so expensive fretless 5ers, my suggestion is always Tom Clement but what's your budget?

I think my budget is around 1K tops. If I spend more than that my girlfriend would literally kill me, which, being me, is not very good.
I didn't mean in this particular thread, but rather in general. Even though they're in minority, they still can piss some people off (have to admit, me included).
