I was one of the young "cats" Fred had the patience to nurture when I got back to Chicago from college, 1973. Fred had jam session/performances at the Chandler Leisure Center in Evanston, on Tuesday nights. Billy Brimfield was usually in attendance along with a bunch of us youngsters. This was a really exciting workshop on playing free jazz and I relished the opportunity to participate, as I had been a big AACM fan in high school, frequently going out to hear Muhal, Henry Threadgill, Kalaparusha, Fred Hopkins and other stars. While I eventually lost touch with that scene, I'll forever be appreciative of Fred's willingness to make the music accessible to me and guys of my generation.
Thank you, Fred. You will be missed!
