FreekBass

Well I have decided to venture into the world of effects. I just do not know where to start. I love Funk music and am looking to find something that will bring out the sound that FreekBass is using on his song "Minute to Forever" here is a link to his myspace where you can hear a clip of it.

I know that it is a process of trial and error just like anything else in finding the sound that fits for me but any other suggestions for pedals/effects would be much appreciated, so that I may narrow down the field especially when I have always played direct with no effects.

Ok, that "wow" on every note is an "Envelope Generator" or "Auto Wah" the EG being better in my opinion. Although you can set it up multiple ways, the setting on your recording looks sort of like this

A D S R

Similar to the ADSR of a keyboard or synth (Attack Decay Sustain Release)

On top of that you can nicely add other fx....

on bass, choruses sound nice, flangers eat your bottom end, phasers are sort of in between

But be careful, you may love your "by myself" sound, and hate it in the "mix"

I used to use a pedal set with 5 effects Compressor, EQ, Chorus, reverb (used for solo only), delay (rarely used it)

I always hated my mix sound...now I run direct, with compression and eq on the amp....I LOVE my sound.

However....I really want an envelope generator

Thanks Introvox I will be researching some Envelope Generators.

As has been suggested in this forum MANY times...

A multi-fx unit might be a good place to start for an fx noob. You'll get one package that includes a multitude of different fx that you can combine and figure out what different things sound like. However, the downside is that multis generally don't provide the best quality fx.

That said, I'm not going to be one to dissuade you from joining the rest of us idiots in the quest for the "perfect" combination of individual - and expensive - pedals.

If you're looking for the funk sounds - the "bwaap" and "dyoop" - you've got to look into an envelope filter. Do a seach in this forum. There's been lots of discussion about them.

My fav: Emma Discumbobulator

Well, clearly he's using several different effects at various points in the tune; however the prominent sound through the middle 2/3 or so sounds to me like an octave-up (which is mixed with the original bass signal) going through an envelope filter. So I'm not saying you can get all of his sounds that way, but for a start that will get you hella close to one of the key sounds, start with those two pedals.

For the old big Q Tron+, What moderately priced compressor would you recommend. and where in line. Before or after. Thanks

Out of all my filters, the Q is the only one that seems to want to clip easily.

You dont use a compressor with the FX25, do you ?

You use a compressor with any filter that cranks out large volume spikes that you want to tame. Both the Qtron and the FX25 are very wet and put out major spikes.

You'd run a compressor after the filters so that you still get the funky sound from the filter but so the volume difference between effected and unaffected levels is not so severe.

Putting a compressor BEFORE an envelope filter would mean you'd have trouble getting it to open when you want if the incoming signal is compressed significantly.

ok well after listening to his sound with headphones on i can tell you a few things.

his signal is split in two or he doubled his recording. two different filters one with a subharmonic generator on it, the other set with a slightly different filter closing speed and eq. and there maybe an octave up slightly buried in there somewhere too.

where this gets good is matching the two filters to not sound muddy or fight each other. heavy compressing that was stated above will help with this as well as even attack playing technique so as to not have the filters over react.
