Fruitcake?

Kibble, milkbones, and P Basses. And redheads.
I much prefer date nut cake. None of that candied fruit for me!
My mother-in-law made her own. Store-bought stuff tastes like jujubes in Betty Crocker cake mix.

Funny you should describe it that way! I've always described the "fruit" in fruitcake as gummy candy. I guess I was eating the "store-bought stuff."
I've never liked the candied fruit in fruitcake, just too sweet for me. But distant relatives owned a bakery that made fruitcakes that a lot of people loved, called Mary of Puddin Hill. The cake part was pretty good though, like a moist carrot cake, nothing at all like the bricks that people make fun of.
They closed down in 2014, but I just read that they sold the recipes and equipment to another bakery and they've started up the line again. [EDIT: $85 for a large fruitcake!!]
It used to annoy my grandmother no end that I'd pick out the fruit and eat the cake.

Having been borderline diabetic, I have to keep away from such foods.
My wife makes a dense cake with dried apricots and nuts that is phenomenal.
I wont touch any other fruitcake and if anyone gives us one, it ends up in the garbage.
