I know several people who are "as nutty as a fruitcake" to quote my late Nan.

One of her fruitcakes I would eat, but I've yet to find another I liked so I just pass and now I'm a carnivore, I have the perfect excuse.

I much prefer date nut cake. None of that candied fruit for me!:spit:

I've never liked the candied fruit in fruitcake, just too sweet for me. But distant relatives owned a bakery that made fruitcakes that a lot of people loved, called Mary of Puddin Hill. The cake part was pretty good though, like a moist carrot cake, nothing at all like the bricks that people make fun of.

They closed down in 2014, but I just read that they sold the recipes and equipment to another bakery and they've started up the line again. [EDIT: $85 for a large fruitcake!!]

It used to annoy my grandmother no end that I'd pick out the fruit and eat the cake.
