I grew up about 50 miles from the Collin Street Bakery in Corsicana. Every household had dozens of those tins lying round, usually used for mixed screws and nuts in the garage.

#1 fruitcake: my mother-in-law's - she's passed now - so not available.
#2 - Collin Street.

I've never got the fruitcake jokes; I guess Yankees must not have access to good fruitcake. It's like the grits jokes - if you've had lousy grits, it doesn't mean grits are bad, it just means you had bad grits.

Doesn't mean grits are good, either. I've had "good" grits and bad, and to me, they're all bad. Even butter can't fix sawdust and sand.

Just finishing my first "brick" of the Claxton Dark. Flavor is good, not so very much different, maybe more raisins and nuts, not sure. Tasty enough, but not enough to pay extra for. IMHO and all that.

My grandma showed me how to make this "Hutzelbrot" (German winter sweetbread with dried fruit)

Yep! Yummyyy!!! But only dried fruit (none of that candied stuff) and nuts

Here is what you need:

Water

Pears, figs, plums, raisins (dried fruits).

Hazelnuts and/or almonds

cinnamon, anise, cherry brandy :wacky:

flour, yeast, sugar, salt

Three days to make them and another three days to let them rest!!!

Gut Ding will Weile haben!

Collin Street adverts used to show up pretty regular on my FB feed. I am extremely tempted to give them a try but $37 is a big price to pay for something I may not like. I may just tip over this year.

As mentioned about 12 pages back, I don't like fruitcake, but these folk sell all the ones they can make at $54 (small) and $85 (large), so clearly some people really like them.

^No candied fruit for me.
