Funk 102

+1, cool to see this thread still going. :bassist:

How about this one? I learned it for an audition last night!

The Isley Brothers

It's Your Thing

Bassist: Marvin Isley

 Hey Man, I went by the Angelo's Music location on Littleton Boulevard recently and picked up a LOT of used Old School discs on the cheap. I had primarily been going to the one in Aurora near my home but I think that I am about to change allegiances! LOL!

One of the discs was Brother, Brother, Brother from The Isley Brothers which had the following on it....

There was a Chic Organization box set released that contained a bunch of Dimitri From Paris remixes. I think they're pretty good remixes (that use mostly elements from the original recordings and stay fairly true to those recordings - more like the remixes of the 70s by guys like Tom Moulton and Larry Levan than the complete recontextualisation that tends to occur with today's remixes). What's really cool (for any Bernard Edwards or Nile Rodgers fans especially) is that there are instrumental versions of those remixes that really highlight the bass and guitar. They're available on iTunes ("I Want Your Love", "Lost In Music", "Thinking Of You", etc.). This one isn't instrumental but it will give you an idea:

Pre ghetto blaster days... when people carried their music on their shoulder, songs created an atmoshpere and no one made a fuss, you were exposed to exciting sounds.

I discovered this song just like that and it is my earliest definition of funk -- wonder if you other posters feel if it holds up. Gets me everytime.

That's good to know. I just started collecting vinyl a year ago and I'm starting to realize that my entire old school funk collection is mostly vinyl and I need that **** on my iphone too. :bawl:

I try to support the local independent stores as much as I can, within reason. I used to hit a lot of pawn shops also but it's getting harder to find discs in those lately. When I was able to a while back, I had great success at the shops that I frequented.

Quite a bit of that type of stuff has been released again on compact disc. When I am disc shopping I normally hit Jerry's Record Exchange near Grant & Colfax and Angelo's. Other stores like Second Spin, Twist & Shout and Wax Trax also have some good stuff but the deals are not as good as I can get from Jerry's, Angelo's or online merchants (Amazon, Tower, Barnes & Nobles, eBay, etc...). You know, you could always rip your wax into digital format...:D

My story is a little different I lost most of my wax after moving to Colorado. I've been in replacement mode since '91. I'm still missing quite a bit but I can honestly say that my current collection is much more diverse than what I owned previously. That's a positive but I am STILL trying my best to replace a lot of what I had!
