Funk and Groove without slap?

Not necessarily "funk" players as such, but can get very funky in pretty much the same way:
Jaco and Michael Manring.

"Barbary Coast" is pretty funky...too, I would say Jaco was more of a R&B/Funk guy than a Jazz guy. Check out his early recordings pre-Weather Report (w/ Woodchuck, Tommy Strand, & Wayne Cochran).
And since he replaced Alphonso Johnson in Weather Report...his Funk chops hadda be intact 'cause that was the vibe Zawinul was hearing.

More Funk/Groove guys with no/little slap-
Chuck Rainey
Alphonso Johnson
Gary Willis
Jeff Andrews
Will Lee
Neil Jason
Oteil Burbridge

Paul Jackson & George Porter, Jr. should be the 1st two that come to mind.

Alan Gorrie with AWB...tasteful R&B/Soul grooves.
