"Funk classics" from the 90's to now?

Just last night I burned some discs for my band. They're all rock guys and are fascinated with my obsession with all things funky. I'm bringing everyone copies of Karl Denson's Tiny Universe album "The Bridge". Next week they get Karl's "Dance Lesson #2". For my money this is some of the best newer funk out there.

Robert Randolph and the Family Band
Gary Clark Jr
(old) RHCP
Rage Against the Machine
Dele Sosimi
Fela Kuti
Prince
and John Mayer might not do 'funk' but live, dude sure is 'funky'..

I think we are all over the place with this and we define funk differently.

We definitely went off the course of the OP.

For me none of the bands above are funk bands and definitely not funky to me ( Meyer can get funky but he's not funk)

Guys, I see and appreciate your efforts. But when your older like me, you get set in your ways.

For most of you that have contributed to this thread, well lets just say if you weren't there which is most of you, your not going to understand even if you have listened to the old recordings, that's not enough.

Proffesor Blue please define Funk for us

I can't, I guess funk is whatever is funky to you.

Below are a few bands that are my kind of funk:

James brown
Bootsy
Sly Stone
Graham Central Station
Tower of Power
Prince

You guys are really losing me if you think Rage Against The Machine is funk. That's just wrong

I think funk is alive and well today...sure the vibe of the era when funk was born can never be duplicated...just like the early days of rock or jazz (or any distinct music) but to say funk is dead would be a slap in the face to many players that are loyal to the genre.

Including guys from back in the day who are still doing it.

Back on topic..........

Funky tunes from the 90s or later that would work for a cover band. Funky and recognizable. I've done all these tunes before, so I can attest to their workability.

Groove Is In The Heart by Dee-Lite. Always packs the dance floor with eye candy. Bootsy plays bass on that tune.

Bust a Move by Young MC is another one that always works. Flea plays a funky bass line on that one.

F*** You by Cee Lo Green is a newer tune that works.

Can't Touch This by MC Hammer. We did this one as a medley into Super Freak, since MC Hammer ripped off Rick James so much they flow perfectly together.

Another band, not pure Funk, but live Hip Hop to check out is The Roots. Killer band. Things Fall Apart and Illadelph Halflife have some cool tunes.

I will give our Professor plus one for including Prince

I will give our Professor minus seven for not including The Meters

The Meters are I'm there. My list is short. There are to many bands and some you won't recognize :

Charles Wright & The 103rd Street Rhythm Band (out of Watts)

Dyke & The Blazers

Cold Blood

I don't think anyone said it was dead
This is definition issue.
