Funkier than what?

I love me some Vulf, but I don’t care for this song and would agree this isn’t really funky (imo). They’ve got plenty of stuff that I think is though.

Agreed, and not sure the "that's not funk... THIS is FUNK" argument is going to get us anywhere.

I am discovering a lot of funky new stuff in this thread, though, so I ain't complaining too much.

The guy I dig out of the Vulfpack crew is guitarist Cory Wong, to me, he's funky.

I watched him explain one of his grooves and I couldn't get the image of monkeys humping a football out of my head.

But I don't mean that in a bad way ;) Maybe if I hear him do something with less of a hyper feel it'll hit me differently. This stuff is way too tense for funk.

Umm, maybe. I really like it despite kinda wanting to hate it because it’s basically frat dork funk. It’s popular though. They did 14,000 people at MSG while not playing to backing tracks with a gillion blinking lights. I can always appreciate that when there’s arguably more disposable/built in the box music than ever.

I don't want to hate it.

Frat dork funk defines it well. I'm not saying it's not popular, I just personally am tired of it. I'm tired of Dirty Loops' vibe too. It's exhausting.

I watched a full Louis Cole show and while the skill levels were off the charts... so what? Three songs in and it got monotonous.

Why does it have to get us anywhere? I was soliciting opinions about this. I got them and offered mine. Basically... a conversation. They go where they go.

Can Vulfpek lay down the funk? Absolutely. Are they a funk band? I wouldn’t describe them that way. Not sure what I’d call them but funk wouldn’t be the first thing that came to mind. They kind of remind me of the Blockheads. Talented and groovy as £&@@, sometimes funky. But mainly groovy.

I don't get all the hate: Vulfpeck is one of the most interesting group of young musicians there is right now. Saw them at MSG and they absolutely killed it. Very high musicianship level, playfulness / engaging the crowd...complete, absolute pros. They are much better at this game than a lot of veterans twice their age, regardless of genre.

I just had to laugh at the "too clean, too digital" comment since most of their stuff is just compressed "a-f" (that's my main critic with their albums, actually). Oh well.

This is my favourite song of theirs. Is it "funk" ? No. Is it funky? I'd say it is. I mean, that subtly wah'ed keyboard, though!

Guys like Bernard Purdie and Bootsy Collins think Vulfpeck is funky, and a great band. They’re actual musicians, playing actual music with an unscripted and spontaneous feel/approach. The amount of hate they get around here is just beyond me.

And that makes this funky? Nope... except to people who consider it so.
:D

Where's the hate? Specifically? It is what it is... so everyone's supposed to feel like you? I'll spell it out... just because someone doesn't care for something doesn't mean they hate it. Yet people love to make that leap.

As far as unscripted and spontaneous feel, I hope you're kidding? It's obviously scripted so how could it be spontaneous?
:D

This is seriously funky band from Arkansas that would play in my area when I was attending Oklahoma State. They were a great live band, and I wish they'd been bigger because they deserved it.

If you can find a copy of this album, New South Soul, grab it. I have a CD copy that I bought at a show and will never part with it.

Awesome - thanks so much for the recco. This is right in my wheel house.

The band reminds me of Fishbone. Not only the music, but the bass players tone.

By the way - I smoked a bowl with Norwood Fisher on his tourbus before a show in Hollywood.

Now then. What do you get if you cross Vulfpeck with the wonderful Nate Smith on his snare and hats......

Something rather funky indeed. Much funkier than the OPs example if I may say so.

This reminds me of Roy Clark and Buck Owens from my childhood. Pickin' and a grinnin'.
