Me-209. For propaganda purposes it was described as a *modified Me-109* but was not really related at all, aside from being designed & built by Messerschmitt. It held the world speed record for many years, IIRC eventually being beaten by Darryl Greenamyer's hot-rodded Bearcat(also posted somewher in this thread.

There wer eabout 4 or 5 produced, and they were each given wildly different paint schemes and codes in order to give the illusion of mass service.

I thought it looked Messerschmit-ish.

True Fax: most of the fighter planes from that era were based off of designs for racing planes, hence the far-back cockpits to balance out the heavy engines. This is what I am told at least.

Not quite. the Hawker Hurricane and Typhoon were inspirations, but that plane did have something to do with the Spit's design.

I googled & got some near-misses but Patriotic War-era Russian stuff is incredibly varied & not so well-documented. I was initially thinking -5 or -7.

Yeah, I couldn't find a match for the pictured plane's canopy/rear fuselage junction, specifically.
