Future Impact now available!! WAS: deep impact reissue!!! interested?

I was finally able to try my FI tonight. I use two basses, a five string jazz-style bass with Q-tuner soapbar pickups and a highly modified Fender Bass VI with Lindy Fralin humbucking P-90 pickups (both passive). Oddly enough, my five string had some noticeable tracking glitches while the Bass VI tracked great (with pick and fingers). Based on my five string experience, I could see why someone might complain about tracking glitches. Overall, I'm super happy with this pedal. There's a huge variety of sounds available in the presets alone. I will probably lose hours of time messing with the editor! A hearty thank you to Andras, Lokki, and anyone else who worked on making this pedal reality! :D

Received mine few days ago and this is my latest noise board.

Try experimenting and doing all the sounding with the FI for this bass loop, sounds pretty good :bassist:

My original DI can now retire..... :hyper:

strange. did you try rolling off the highs (tone knob) with your q-tuner bass?

Observation: it seems that enabling VCF Pitch Tracking increases the chance of audible pitch glitching. My theory is that when overall pitch detection misses it's throwing the filter to a high frequency during the glitch making it a bit more obvious.

Uploaded a few more patches. Anything of mine that has 01, 02, 03, etc. appended are patches showing my progression along the way towards a tone that more closely matches the song it's attempting to cover.

Sounding good...
Does anyone know if the FI is intended as a long term product, or just a few runs?
I'd love to have one of these, but having bought a new bass recently, the music budget is blown!
However, it'd suck to miss out forever on one of these because I'm too stingy right now!:D:(

yeah, pretty sure it is going to be long term...

I really can't wait to try these patches. I'm hoping to do so tomorrow.

After spending a few more hours with the Mac editor off-an-on over the weekend creating patches I have the following questions, comments, etc. Editor specific comments should be considered against whatever newer editor is being developed as opposed to changes against the current placeholder editors.

* The VCO in this box are really great sounding with a lot of excellent sounds just by themselves before you even factor in the VCF and effects. You can have one doing a sharp attack only, the others managing the sustain. Lots of options.
* VCA Release seems non-functional, it seems to do nothing audible. In a normal synth if you set a long release then the VCO continues to fade out after you physically stop triggering the VCO. You can hear a trailing release in the Depeche Mode - Just Can't Get Enough track I posted in the "sound challenge" post linked around in here. In my dream world that's exactly what VCA Release would do. Though I guess without VCO Release it has nothing audible to work with.
* Segue from that, it would be super, duper, DUPER awesome if we could have a true Attack-Decay-Sustain-Release for each VCO block. I would be fine with a volume for each voice, which feeds into this ADSR, then out to a master overall VCO volume. That still gives us four VCO blocks to blend/pitch shift and set unique ADSR for.
* Then we'd need a matching set of Attack-Decay-Sustain-Release in order for us to fully leverage the VCO Release.
* Vintage Freq has a significantly different attack/decay performance than the alternative Freq. Set the same attack/decay/envelope/AD and then try to pick a similar frequency point. Observe the playing feel for the attack/decay feels different. Is this just due to the scaling between the two frequency implementations or is there something else at play? I do like that they have a different sound, its kind of like giving us two different primary filters to choose from and the filters are a huge sound of a synth.
* In the editor I would suggest renaming "Freq" to "Modern Freq" so it's visibly clear there's a difference but relationship between the two frequency implementations so you end up with "Vintage Freq" and "Modern Freq"
* In the editor I would suggest having a radio button to enable either Vintage Freq / Modern Freq and have them each have their own frequency slider. That way we can quickly toggle between the two frequency implementations rather than having to drag the Vintage slider to -1 to enable the Modern Freq.
* In the editor it would be excellent if I could double-click any slider parameter and have it instantly reset to the default value, typically 0. Would save me a lot of click-n-slide action.
* In the editor it would be excellent if I could hove my mouse cursor over a parameter then use mouse wheel / two-finger-scroll to move the slider up and down. Would save me from having to specifically click-n-hold. My carpal tunnel will thank you. :)
* Wishful thinking, it would be great if there was a dedicated multiband EQ block so we could still use the drive/modulation and then EQ all of that. I find myself looking to the EQ quite often, but when I want to add overdrive to soften or distort the synth the tone changes a lot with no way to re-shape the tonal balance.
* I'd love a dry/wet blend in the Overdrive section.
* In the Overdrive section the naming scheme "BASS_BLEND" and "OVERDRIVE_BLEND" are kind of a misnomer since they're not blending but instead are turning an input to the drive completely on/off.

From a sound sculpting standpoint don't forget to consider effects AFTER the Future Impact. Putting stereo modulation like a chorus effect afterwards can really help to give you that wide, lush synth sound like you hear in studio recordings.

* VCA Release seems non-functional, it seems to do nothing audible. In a normal synth if you set a long release then the VCO continues to fade out after you physically stop triggering the VCO.

See the manual:
"As a further twist, the VCA envelope works this way as described here only when it
is driven from a keyboard or a computer; when it is driven from a bass, then
the sound decays either with the release time of the envelope, or with the
natural release of the bass sound as the sound is stopped, whichever is
shorter. This allows much more natural sounds from the bass guitar."

That is right. The AD adjustment range on the DI was very limited. If VINTAGE is off, the time scales for both VCF AD and VCA AR are much wider, allowing shorter and longer times.

let me address some of these:

vca release is not REALLY working in bass mode, i agree. it works exactly as you describe in midi mode. i talked to andras about it already a couple of times. it is not possible to do, since there is a discernible change in pitch once you stop a note. this would mean in synth world, every time you stop the note on the bass, the vco section would go down in pitch for the release part, not very pleasant i think. i vote instead for an attack decay control when in bass mode, which would allow for short sounds with all waveforms not just saw.

i would LOVE LOVE LOVE adsr big time!! it is not likely to happen (i already suggested it many times)

vintage freq also sets different attack and decay times to make it d.i. compatible. longer attack and decay times were a suggestion i made, at the beginning they were always as short as in vintage freq. this is intentional and important since compatibility is important for some folks

filter switch: i suggested exactly this for the new editor already, but i vote for just one slider that remembers it's value when set to vintage/modern. i can easily implement this in my editor if there is still someone using it after the new one is released. i don't know if the filter switch makes it into the new editor :)

in my editor you can click ANY number box and just enter the value there. also you can alt-click on any number box and reset it to zero (in fact you can toggle between zero and the last entered value and the value goes to zero even if that is normally not possible. that is a bug in puredata) this will make all the editing a LOT faster.

i agree about serial effects and dry/wet in the overdrive section, but this is for andras to consider...(serial effects could be though to implement i think)

i can change the names in my editor no problem.

The thing about VCA Release that threw me is that VCA Attack does in fact impart some audible change with bass input. Though it doesn't really work like a normal Attack control as it doesn't cause a slow fade-in of the sound (think BOSS Slow Gear) but instead it seems to work more as an inverse volume control for the VCO section. The more you turn up VCA Attack the quieter/softer the VCO seems to get.

Other editor comments:

* To clarify Lokki's Mac editor alt-click function, you that on the numeric value box, not on the slider itself. I'll be using that a LOT. Thanks for telling me about it.
* Solo / Mute buttons for the VCO sections. At least right now I spend a lot of time blending and tweaking the various VCO, move sliders up-and-down-then-back-up-then-back-down over and over is tedious. Though Lokki's mention of alt-click might be adequate now that I know about that.
* Making the layout more visually intuitive with some signal flow lines. Put a dummy "Bass Input" block, then some arrows clearly showing where that routes to, where the VCO blocks route to (not into the Harmonizer, for example). Some amount of your block diagram stuff right in the editor. It might possibly make it more intuitive and educational for many users to get some clear visual queues as to logically how things are working. Alternatively, maybe putting the Harmonizer block visually first would make it more intuitive that the VCO doesn't flow into it. I'm sure some clever UI developer could come up with some great ideas.

Not knowing the technical aspects I assumed once it hear the bass envelope release, it could hold the previous pitch and impart a release control to it. Until it detected a new bass attack as which point the previous release is overridden even if it hadn't fully released yet.

i think the problem with that is, that when you detect a release from the bass, it is already too late, the pitch has already changed.

I finally had a quick minute to check out the patches you uploaded. Great job! Especially the Chromeo patch. Cool. Thanks for sharing. I'm hoping to upload a few more later this afternoon (US EST).

Still learning how to leverage the zillions of VCO possibilities, that's definitely where most of the magic happens. Assuming nothing ever changes in firmware beyond what's currently provided there's so-o-o-o many great sounds you can get out of this little box leveraging the editor.

Regarding the sound challenge songs:

I struggled to get anything close to the NiN Closer sound, it has a really varied envelope and a resonant but not peaky sound that's really hard to get close to. Probably not going to give that one any more effort.

Also haven't been able to get Parliament's Flashlight sound yet. Seems like a pretty basic tone and I'm sure it's in the VCO blocks, I just haven't found the right blend to get there.

The MSTKRKFT sound is close but not a perfect match. Hard to get that sharp, modern edgy sound via foldover / overdrive but still maintain the thickness / fullness. At least for me at this point.

Still learning. :)
