Hmm never did for me. Never had a problem. But honestly if he is just doing program changes midi commander is a better alternative and very easy to use as well. Midi Designer has a bit of a learning curve. Also, if your not careful when setting it up, midi designer will change other parameters as well without knowing it.

I remember I made a new program change template in Midi Designer just as a backup in case one of my other methods crapped out. When I tested it, it did change programs flawlessly but it changed other parameters in the FI as well (unfortunately I don't remember which ones). I remember my patches sounded different. I then had to go back into midi designer and make sure the only message that it was sending was program messages. It was just weird that I started from scratch and that there were other messages being sent by default. Perhaps it was a glitch. Who knows?? It's irrelevant anyway.

There is no doubt that Midi Designer is superior, and as I stated, I love it and love using it. But to spend $20 just to change programs is kinda a waste of bread if you ask me. I'm sure there are many free and cheaper alternatives for just program changes.

I know this is a bit unorthodox, but I would check out Unreal Book for IOS. It sends midi program changes when you load a song and you can arrange your charts in setlist order. Very simple to do and it's only $4.99. You also can send multiple program changes for every page in a chart as well, and you'll have something if you ever need to read chord changes or lyrics. You can back everything up to dropbox and access them from dropbox at any time.

There may be free ios apps that send program changes, but I am not aware nor never researched it since I already use unreal book. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

It would be irresponsible of me to tell you this pedal will work flawlessly with the FI without having one to try out. It looks like it could work to change programs on the FI. I'm not sure exactly what you are asking about storing presets. If you mean in a live situation, you still will need to do that manually on the FI. But without having this unit and testing it out, it's hard for me to provide you a definitive answer.

The Mk I version just sent program changes (PC) on all channels, which in theory would work for scrolling through presets, but you can already do that on the pedal itself. I didn't delve into the Mk II specs but it seems like you might be able to program it to access specific programs? I disavow all responsibility, though. :)

Haven't tried that one, but I've been using the [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] for the exact same purposes and works flawlessly.
It has USB out so you can connect it to your PC and play with the FI editor if desired.

EDIT: Actually, no, the Disaster Area does not allow one-tap changes between distant presets.

That's what essentially drew me to it. It seems to have a function where you can store 8 of your favourite pre-sets (e.g. 1, 3, 6, 28, 52 and 72) and just switch between them with one touch. Could anyone recommend anything else that can also do this?

It sounds like it will work. Scroll through all your FI presets, save the eight you use regularly and scroll between just those ones, not all 99 on the FI. I don't have/use one of these either, so no guarantees, but I do use a One Control OC-10 looper on my board for my switching system. It has 70 slots in 10 banks, only a handful of which I use for pedal/loop switching. The rest of the slots I use to switch presets on the FI via it's midi out. It's a bit limited in how/what PC messages it sends, but it works. I ramble...point was it is a One Control product like the gecko and it communicates fine with the FI. :thumbsup::bassist:

The OC-10 sends a PC message (0-69), one number for each loop/preset number, i.e. preset1 = PC0, preset2 = PC 1, etc. there's no way to assign what PC gets sent by a given preset number. So I saved all my FI patches in slots 40-70 (roughly) so the numbers matched the PC numbers sent by the looper. I can switch from patch 41 to patch 57 with two clicks, not ideal (still no preset names) but better than scrolling. But, if you don't have need for a looper like that, it's probably not worth the money/board space solely for a midi program changer.

I'm an apple user so it would ideally be in that environment. Sounds like the PUC+ and unreal book should do it. I've been a long time user of iRealbook for a long time now and could probably use an upgrade there.

Would I be able to have the patches listed with unreal book so I can just click between them? Maybe in a set list or something?

That looks like it is ideal for a simple patch selector, I will also check it out later...
