Future Impact now available!! WAS: deep impact reissue!!! interested?

Dear F.I. users,
please help me, I have tracking issues. I play passive basses, and as far as I can tell I have good muting right and left hand technic. My problem is, that I can't make the unit do proper tracking that I can rely on. I have put compressor in front of the unit, tried different things, but sometimes it works, sometimes not, and I don't feel safe on concerts becouse of this. I'm curious about your ways of using the F.I.. It can be a problem as well, that the things I'm using the unit for are rather busy bass lines, so I have to play very clean, so I'm playing them with my Zoom B3n with some defret, Z-tron and chorus effects... of course it doesn't sound as good :)
Thanks for the advices!
you use the zoom b3n before the future impact in your chain? if so, don't use chorus!!! it will destroy any good tracking, since chorus is by definition an effect that adds slightly detuned signals to the original...

No, no way, maybe I was not clear enough. I was using the B3n instead of the F.I., as I couldn't make the F.I. follow the busy bass lines, I had to play. But after setting the Note On, and Note Off level, everything became so good, it was a true life changing experience! :)

I may regret asking as I don't need more GAS, but how doe the B3n tone stack up to FI tone. I have not heard a pitch tracking synth pedal sound as good as the Future Impact.

For tracking, it helps if you roll your tone knob to cut as much highs as possible but mechanically muting with fingers, palms, hair tie, fuzzy stuff works better. I recently found that tossing a piece of fuzzy Velcro between my pickup and string does wonders. I'd love a device that could raise and lower a fuzzy or foamy mute with the some super easy actuation.

Thanks for the added tracking advice.
As to the B3N, the sound quality of the synths is not in the same league with the F.I. Others sound fine, good compressors, good amp modeling, quite good Ztron, it's really great especially in that price range, worth trying!

If the B3n is anything like the B3 you can craft some pretty decent sounding synth tones by stacking all 3 blocks together using octaves, synth block, blends, heavy EQ, etc. Though nothing as excellent sounding as the FI. The biggest downside is the overall playing performance is not nearly as good as the FI. You need to play a lot slower and cleaner, yeah a lot slower, and expect a lot more pitch glitching. I have a lot of B3 sound samples and patches shared on my page: Zoom B3 sound samples and patches - cgraham.com Yeah, listen to all the note drops during the octave jumps in my synth clips. Though it's not completely terrible considering the cheap price and the fact it's a chock full multieffect.

.

Gas squashed, thanks!

I adjusted my Future Impact Note on/off parameters, but didn't notice much of a difference?
Does anybody else find the Note on/off parameters to be useful in cleaning up triggering/articulation?

Nice lil device!

Maybe I am going crazy or have out of date editor software. What not on/off parameters are we talking about?

Have you tried messing with the attack on VCA and VCF for better tracking? For fast notes I have had good results slowing the VCA attack a bit and relying more on the envelop follower than envelope for the VCF. (With the mechanical methods I discussed)

You should look down to the pedal, just like I did. :) In the Parameter section those are the first two labels in a yellow area.

I'm pretty sure the note on/note off parameters control the level(s) at which the synth sound triggers/releases based on the bass signal. I could be wrong.

It definitely controls the bass input, kind of a pseudo-sensitivity control. Works together with the input level control, i.e. a higher input level would require a little less note on level and visa versa, in my experience anyway. I have my input level a little on the low side, so note on/off parameters are turned up a few ticks. Might affect midi as well if you are using a midi keyboard to trigger the FI, I've never used it that way so I don't know for sure.

Huh, I had to investigate. I guess I set it long ago and forgot about it. I can't get any better results in tracking by manipulating the Note On or Note Off. The settings just seem to brick wall a range of amplitudes from triggering the synth. It has zero effect on glitches in my experience. I guess I don't have much unintended low amp signal feeding the pedal.

Perhaps it is my playing style or my envelop settings, but when I push the limits of the FI with fast staccato full of dead note muting I get the same glitches at both extremes of the Note On & Off settings.

To me the tracking is damn good no mater the setting.

Yeah, muted/dead notes will make it glitch. That has been my experience as well. It needs a pitch to track. It tracks very well, even at fast tempos, as long as it has enough pitch information to follow. It's a pretty awesome pedal, IMO.:bassist:

Totally, it is expected, but the glitches in my experience are appropriate for a dead note anyhow, best sounding glitches on the market IMO & IME. For my playing style this thing tracks damn near perfect. Well, as long as you are finger thumpn' that is;)
