My whole thing with bass synth pedals is lets master the basics. The killer analogue style tones that sound huge and are usable on tons of songs. I know some like to play non bass sounding leads and chords, and thats cool too, but my focus is on the classic bass sounds. No pedal has nailed that yet.

All these things will make using the FI easier and more attractive to me, certainly. So I appreciate it. I would think it would also make it more attractive to those who are in the place of debating FI/C4.

I haven't updated my FI to the newest firmware yet. I'm planning on putting it back on my board this week, so I guess it's as good a time as any. What's the best way to proceed here...I'm using FI->Roland UmOne->Macbook Pro. IIRC there are two ways to update firmware.

^The C4 has made it viable for me to fit the FI back on my board and, and if I can get some great new patches happening will be an additional asset.

That’ll do it. You can update via chrome or via the editor.

it comes close. It doesn't nail them yet for me. The pitch tracking is not always as tight as i want and the sound is not quite as full as my analogue synths. For live, its pretty great but i think it can get better (maybe v3 is what i need) but for studio i still use my synths.

It would seem I’m a glutton for punishment; I’ve made a start on writing a new manual section discussing the FI as a replacement for standard single-effect pedals. It may or not make it into the final version. I’ll see how it turns out.

So far I’ve planned to include:
Envelope filter
Pedal wah-wah
Chorus/flange
Tremolo
Vibrato
Octaver

Any glaring omissions? Please bear in mind, this is extra work and not strictly necessary.

I'm assuming you want input on this and I'm sure I'll probably be in the minority here but I have no interest in this. I have other pedals such as H9's , etc, and really only need the FI for synth sounds. Never was crazy about the other effects in the FI anyway. With that being said I could understand why some would want to try and utilize the fx to save pedal board space.

If you really want to hear the phatness and "analoguey" sounds the FI is capable of, play the pedal through a real PA with quality subs. It sounds absolutely massive and thunderous. Vintage as it gets. My sound guy and I laugh all the time because we cannot believe how huge the FI sounds through the PA.

again i am talking about studio work and not live. For me it does not quite do it yet for reasons i already stated. I literally can lay down both sounds on a moog, or bass station and compare and i always pick the synth right now. I produce a lot of music so i know what i want to hear and i am hoping v3 will get me there.

Ah ok. Understood. I missed that part when you were talking about a studio environment.

I’m a professional audio engineer by trade for over 25 years now and have mixed and produced projects during this time as well. And I agree with you in that sense. Right tool for the job. Speaking for myself from an audio engineer perspective, I only really see the FI as a performance / live tool. I’m not saying you couldn’t use it for production, but if I want a certain sound say from a DX7 or an Oberheim, PPG, etc, I would just use the real thing or at the very least a virtual synth. I don’t really see the reason in a production environment to try to get the FI to emulate a vintage synth when you could just use the real thing... unless you don’t have access to it or perhaps not a keyboard player.

I think we’ve all made it clear here that there are certain things the FI can’t emulate such as the infamous E bass 1 from the DX7, and some other tones as well. I still use a keyboard live with virtual synths for certain things that the FI can’t quite emulate or it’s just easier for me to play it on a keyboard than on a bass.

With that being said, for live use, I have never played a synth pedal that sounds so analog and phat as the FI. It absolutely kills live. As I stated many times here, it is such an integral part of my gigs with many bands. Fellow musicians are blown away at the sounds I can make with the FI. It is a game changer. For me at least.

That sure is purrrrtty and sexy! Which Westones are you using for IEM’s? I use the UMpro 50’s. Love them and I just got the UM56 adapter custom molds for them.

They're AmPro30's which have been a pretty good choice. The board has had 3 pedals removed now, with the addition of the C4, which also allowed me to put the FI back on.

Agree 100%. No bass synth pedal, including the FI (or C4) can truly compete with a keyboard synth. I have one of those in my home studio (Yamaha Motif), so I have the opportunity to A-B it to my FI. But I don't have the inclination nor need to haul my keyboard to a gig in order to 100% duplicate a synth bass line. I haul enough gear to a gig as it is. The FI gets me close enough.

The vibrato via MIDI has been a feature from day one! Plug in an expression pedal sending out CC1. Set the LFO-to-VCO depth in the editor.

The core oscillator sounds haven’t changed, the updates are all functionality enhancements. It’s more that there’s full ADSR and the 4-slot mod matrix.

Make sure you perform a “Reset All” via the boot menu, otherwise the tuner won’t default to 440.

Won’t be long until you have to update again.

Ahhh I missed that. I tried the tuner the other day and couldn’t believe how off it was. The tuner on the FI had to read sharp in order to match the tuner on my pedal board. Don’t know how I missed that. Thanks for pointing that out.

You’re welcome. I’ve made it very clear in several places in the new manual.
