I do have dynamics programmed in some stuff. Also, most of the expression controls I've added are meant to be played like a wah pedal where you constantly rock it back and forth but rather they are designed to introduce variations to the envelope shape, cutoff, envelope depth, oscillator configuration, etc so that each patch has some nice textural variation that is precisely controllable.

Yes, all of your patches are good and rich... even those who use these CC features are fine without using the expression pedal

I just mention I've never user a external pedal to change these parameters.

From your experiences, what is the best expression pedal to use with the FI, or what is the best way to get the most control over the parameters of the pedal?

Any standard expression will work (Moog, Dunlop, Roland).

I'm not sure I understand exactly what you're asking so I'll answer as I interpret your question. In order to get the most control you need at least an expression pedal and some means of connecting the expression pedal to the Fi via 5-pin MIDI port. If you are a Source Audio user then their Hub will work for that but you'll then need something to connect to that if you want to be able to change presets remotely.

If you want complete control over everything then you need a MIDI controller capable of sending multiple CC messages. I highly recommend the Morningstar Engineering MC6 or MC8 for maximum control. You can hook up 1-4 expression pedals (depending on the unit in question) or have one expression pedal be capable of controlling up to 16 different parameters (simultaneously if you so desire). Via the MC6's/MC8's buttons, you can also use MIDI CCs to control the filter cutoff, synth volume, master volume, glide rate (if using a keyboard), tuner, LFO depth to filter and VCO as standard. Furthermore, via the FI's four flexi slots you can control up to any other four parameters in real time via MIDI CCs.

The Morningstar controllers can be used to change patches too.

My honest advice is buy an MC6 and an expression pedal and you'll have all the control you could wish for.

I'm looking for the easiest way to to have real time control. I won't be using a keyboard. I've looked up the Source Audio Reflex, and that seems like pretty cool, but looks to be impossible to find. I've also looked at the Behringer FCB1010. That could work, but it's also pretty big.

If you assign one or more of those slots to a MIDI CC message then you can use a controller such as the MC6 to manipulate those parameters in real time. If you listen to my sound clips, in most of them you can hear the sound change over time and much of that is achieved by what I just described.

On a more basic level, MIDI is useful for controlling the pedal remotely. For instance, jumping directly to a particular preset (as opposed to having to scroll), being able to jump banks and scroll presets without having to use the cumbersome double-click on the FI's footswitch or operating by hand in the case of the bank button.

I've gone quite deep with this stuff and have figured out clever ways to play 5-note chords on the FI in real time with proper internal voice leading. Check my clips for examples. This was all possible due to the huge power (and simplicity) of the MC6. Oh, and the MC6 is really small.

Perfect. I think I'm sold. HAHA!! I guess with the midi in/out and no dedicated expression pedal jack overwhelmed me, but I think I can handle it. In time we shall see.

I put a vote in for more MIDI control. I use a Boss ES-8 switcher that allows me to assign expression control to a CC, so the more the merrier for available function. I regularly dig in deep w MIDI when I dig in.

I've got a TON to read and learn still. The editor is WAY intimidating to me. I have surface knowledge of synthesis and am trying to check out a bunch of online resources to learn the most. The one thing I wish there was...would be a youtube video explaining how the editor works.
