I guess this warrants a little back-tracking then - I looked up my service emails - though this is a side-topic.

What I was trying to do was add an EXP pedal to an ES-5 setup that already had an external switch. That’s not an option with the ES-5 - you can do one or two switches OR one expression pedal - which is why the expression pedal would only toggle on/off. At the time, I needed both, so I added the DMC.micro to give me that. That also gave me two more switches on my board - I figured I’d utilize them - it was inelegant.

So, I did a size comparison of the ES-5 + DMC.micro + foot switch with an ES-8, and realized that an ES-8 would give me more onboard assignable switches and the capability for two expression pedals in a better layout and not much more space.

7 onboard switches on the ES-5. 12 on the ES-8, which made an external foot switch unnecessary.

I still use the DMC on a small board - which consists of an ADAM, an H9, an expression pedal, and sometimes the FI - all patchable and midi-capable.

Most of my patches already have expression assignments (CC1) added if you want to play around with those.

Otherwise just use an init patch and assign expression via the flexi slots to whatever you like. Obviously if you’re assigning to something like pulse width, you’d need to have square wave volume turned up to hear the result.

On the FI Facebook group, there’s been some contention that the FI is unable to compete with a keyboard synth such as a Moog. In view of this, here’s a little game you can play. Two clips, one is a Moog Subsequent 37, the other is the FI. Please submit your guess in a comment and give a reason for your answer if you can.

Perhaps a little clarification is in order. I recorded the first clip via keyboard and captured the MIDI data; I then used those data to trigger the other device for the second clip. So both clips are played absolutely identically and both from a keyboard; the only difference is the patch itself.

I’ll share the patch details after I’ve given people chance to respond.

They sound quite close to me - I would guess the first, slightly brighter one as being the FI, but it doesn’t matter because both would be completely acceptable on stage.

The brightness difference is simply due to my failure to exactly match the cutoff values.

You should come and check out the Facebook group. There’s a guy in there who’s adamant that the FI can’t compete. I feel he might just be trolling me but I’ve challenged him to listen to the clips and hazard a guess if he’s so certain…

I was going to say that the sounds were virtually identical. There is a difference, but not one I consider significant or care about.

I was going to say the first clip was the FI because I felt like I heard slightly more glitching, but if it was played by MIDI then maybe I was making that up...

I think if I do this again, I’ll construct both patches from scratch at the same time, adjusting one parameter at a time, only adding the next parameter once the previous one is matched.
