Future Impact now available!! WAS: deep impact reissue!!! interested?

Hello everyone, it's been a year since I had a problem updating to v3, but I've somehow gotten it to work over the weekend - I used the same interface (Focusrite 2i4 gen1) and it updated this time. I immediately loaded the pedal with @Quatschmacher's patches and oh boy do they sound fantastic!!! :) :) This is excellent programming!!!

Now that it can be controlled with expression pedal via MIDI cc, I have some ideas that will probably cost me too much, but it's been a long time since I was this enthusiastic :). So hear me out:
  • I first wanted to buy some MIDI switcher that will allow me to use the expression pedal with the Future Impact. Then I realized that doesn't make sense to buy something that does 100 things and use it only for one.
  • Then I looked into the expression pedals that send MIDI cc, and found only Source Audio Reflex, which is sadly discontinued.
  • I talked to @DELACIUS today and he mentioned Boss MS-3 - I think this is what would work the best for me because it has three independent loops which I could use for octaver, synth and drive. Inbuilt effects are bonus. But I have a question - will it work with Future Impact? - I need it to switch the presets, and I need to be able to use the expression pedal, nothing else.
This is probably a question for another forum, but is tuner on MS-3 any good? I've been using TC Polytune for the past 10 years and I still love it.
Thank you for reading!! :)

I bought the MS-3.
So far, it works as planned. I can:
1. Switch the FI patches on the MS-3 patch change
2. Use the expression pedal on some FI patches
3. Use the Sustain feature - this works really great. I programmed the MS-3 to raise the clean volume when the synth note is sustained.
4. Sell the TC Polytune because inbuilt tuner works god enough that I won't miss it (not that I have a choice because there's no room for it on the pedalboard :D )

Only downside with the MS-3 is that it can't send PC messages within the patch - it can only do it on the patch change. But I was warned about that, so no surprise there.

There are still a few more things to learn about the MS-3, but so far I don't regret the purchase at all.

PS
Thank you again @Quatschmacher for great FI patches! :)

You’ll only be able to use expression on those patches which have CC1 programmed (either the global LFO to VCF and to VCO, or if there’s a CC1 assignment in a Flexi); you could edit patches to add these.

You could also use CC11 or CC74 to have direct control over the filter cutoff on all patches.

Bear in mind, if you’re using CC92 to raise the dry volume, it’ll only go to the maximum set by the INSTR slider in the patch; if you want it at unity gain, you’ll need to set that slider to 127 in the editor (or override it using the CC98+CC98 combination for that parameter (see Andras’ document earlier in this thread) and set it to maximum using CC6).

Glad you’re enjoying the patches. Any favourites?

Some good info there, thanks! My only regret is not having more time to master it all. - I still need go through all the patches and adjust the levels. Then I need figure out what I want to control with expression pedal and how to get there.. So many things on my todo list, and so little free time.. :)

Glad you’re enjoying the patches. Any favourites?
Many actually - 65 of the sounds loaded in to the FI are your creations. I'm at work at the moment and I don't recall the patch names, but I remember that 808 patches sounded like a bomb.

@goran yea man, glad all is working.
@Quatschmacher what do you think I want to get a switcher so I'm looking at Disaster Area DPC-8EZ and Mini baby for expression pedal to control FI? Your thoughts?
Do you mean one or the other?

They both do expression via the multi jack. Might also be worth looking at the new DMC micro pro (has screen which can show patch names).

The bigger one does have some pretty cool loop functionality, though the lack of a screen is a bit disappointing at that price.

Might be worth checking the Morningstar controllers and their loop switcher too, though that’s fewer loops. They have a new loop switcher stereo loops and a screen coming later in the year.

well I need both because the guys at disaster area told me and I quote "the 8EZ doesn’t have an expression input so you’d need it plus a controller to work"... which is weird because that switcher has same multi jack as midi baby... but I thought they would know? I'm confused now.
Yea morning star is great but I need more than 5 loops.

Seems you are correct - the 8EZ’s multijack doesn’t do expression. That’s a shame.

Ok I'm not confused anymore:

The DPC-8EZ Gen3 uses the MutliJack as either a buffered tuner output or a MIDI interface.

So I'll need 8EZ and any of their devices that uses multi jack as exp pedal (like: MIDI Baby 3, MIDI Baby, DMC.micro PRO etc.)

Any news on that super sick werlitzer patch?
I hadn’t got around to posting it - been very busy with some other cool stuff. The caveat is that it doesn’t work particularly well on bass; it’s great when using MIDI though.

I’ve just tried uploading it via the URL feature in the database. Let me know if it does/doesn’t work. There are 3 different patches in the drop-down menu but only the last portion is shown so the text is sadly identical.

The DMC.micro is a great little pedal for up to 4 supported devices. And you can finally define CCs for newer, undefined MIDI devices. And you can do everything but name presets on the DMC itself.

the MIDI Baby is a little more interesting to me because it’s just regular old midi messages sent to all 16 channels. But you need to plug it in to a computer.

with either, you can activate and bypass midi pedals. This could lessen your need for a looper pedal.

The Boss ES-5 is a great mid-sized midi controller/looper, but it lacks expression control, which is what prompted me to add the DMC.micro and eventually upgrade to the much bigger ES-8 - which is simply an amazing controller.

I keep the DMC.micro for my small board setup, and it’s Utility modes make it a useful multi-tool.

Am I missing something here? Perhaps I'm missing something here with your statement about expression control. You can hook up an expression pedal to the Boss ES5. I've used an expression pedal with it all of the time.

ii) MIDI Control Change (Continuous Controller)
As a fully-fledged MIDI controller, the ES-5 can broadcast MIDI CC signals allowing you to perform realtime changes of various parameters of MIDI Compatible devices (For a list of what parameters are controllable, you should refer to the owner’s manual of the target device.) These signals can either be generated from with the ES-5 itself, or by using Expression or Control pedals connected to the ES-5’s CTL IN jack Let’s look at an example where we wish to connect an Expression pedal to the ES-5 and then use that to alter the FEEDBACK rate of the DD-500 in real time via MIDI.

it’s been a good long while since I was trying to do this. At the time, I could only toggle on/off with the EXP pedal. Maybe I was doing something wrong back then, maybe it was a FW revision, idk?

in any case, the DMC.micro ended up working very well for me. It was when I had challenges using the DMC.micro as a toggle switch for another Boss product, the EQ-200, that I decided upgrade to the ES-8 for the additional onboard assignable buttons.

Anyone happen to know the values of the Input/Output potentiometers? The shaft is loose on my Input Level pot and is causing occasional signal loss. It is def the shaft and not a broken solder joint (unfortunately, because that would be an easy fix). Opening it up, I see they are Alps brand pots, but seems no values are printed on them, just batch numbers. The Alps website has several similar looking ones, but I'm not sure which it is.

Yeah you were definitely doing something wrong. The ES5 always had that ability. It has assignable control buttons as well. I am only pointing this out because I don't want people here to be misled about the Boss ES5. It's important for all of us to try and keep information as accurate as possible for everyone. I've been fact checked here many times as well because I was mistaken and I was thankful to be corrected. It's helpful for everyone, so please don't take it personally. :)

The Boss ES5 is a very powerful switching pedal with great midi programmability and capability. If you have the real estate available on your pedal board, it is definitely worth it and does a lot more than the DMC.Micro. The parallel loop function on the ES5 is a great added bonus to have when blending effects. I moved to the DMC from the ES5 only because I wanted to use a smaller pedal board.
In the end, I'm glad it worked out for you. :)

You find a complete description how to replace a damaged potentiometer. Beware, it requires some soldering skill.
Oops, the site does not allow to upload zip files. If you need that, contact me and I send you.
