What interface are people using to connect to their FIs these days? My Roland UM-One Mk II seems to be a bit finicky.

I may have an alternative; it would be a bit of a hassle, however.

I had one and replaced it with the Roland. I think M-Audio stopped supporting the Mac version I was on, IIRC, but don't quote me on the details.

I've installed the Roland drivers and it seems to be powered but in the web updater for the FI there are no available MIDI devices to select.

Plug it in before you launch the browser otherwise it won’t be detected. Also make sure MIDI is enabled in chrome.

I still use the UM-One mk2 for firmware updates. For everything else I use the MC6 Pro.

I'm trying to use my Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 instead. Chrome updater still doesn't work (I think I properly enabled Web MIDI in Chrome).

I can see the Scarlett in the FI Editor app and select those inputs/outputs (I've got two 5-pin cables and I'm going FI out -> Scarlett in and vice veras) and I trying to do a firmware update that way; I've selected the 3.61 firmware file but it only says "Connecting to FI..." and hangs.

My Scarlett 2i4 cannot handle updates. Use the Roland. Install the driver before plugging in the interface to the pc. I did once have an issue installing the driver on a laptop and had to go in and manually select the driver again but was fine thereafter.

Yep, dead easy. Set the cross thru connections in the MC6 pro as follows:

USB Device MIDI Thru - tick the “DIN5” box.

DIN5 MIDI Thru - tick the “USB device” box.

Connect MC6 pro to PC via USB.

Select the MC6 pro as the input and output in the FI editor.

Hook up MC6 Pro MIDI out to FI MIDI in.

Hook up FI MIDI out to MC6 Pro MIDI in.

I got this all working. I found some of the terminology confusing, but now it makes sense. This is a little off topic, but how do you organize your MC6 Pro? I'm trying to figure out if I should have one preset for the FI and a preset for an Eventide H90 on each page with on/off for each and maybe some other parameter options or should I load up page one with 6 different combination presets and manipulations of each on page 2 or maybe page 3. So many options! I'm thinking of setting up a three button footswitch for on/off for each effect in the H90 and a global on/off, since I use those a lot on the H90.

Also, do you route the midi from the devices back into the MC6 Pro? If so, what are the benefits?

That's fantastic, thanks for the info! That's going to be a nice quality of life upgrade.

My board is set up with a MIDI loop going: MC6 > Stomp > FI > C4, so all I'd have to do is plug in the MC6 with the USB I already have ready and waiting from my PC. That's how I edit on my Stomp. Wish I could use the editor for the C4 the same way!

My UM-One didn't seem to be powering up this time. Curious if you can explain this latter step for Macs (I don't know how to do this).

I've got some other options to try -- I have an older dual boot laptop with Windows so I will see if I can make that work.

I’m not familiar with Macs enough, I’m afraid. Maybe @Charlie Tuna could give you some pointers if he has time.

I’ve been using my setup like this for years with my MC8 and now MC6 Pro. Most of my playing is done on my home setup. I used to have everything running through the computer, so powered the MC6 via the USB. I recently got a Beat Buddy which now means I can do a headphone setup without having to use the computer so I simply power the MC6 with a standard 9V supply and don’t have to change any wiring.

Haven’t tried this but wonder if the Neuro environment would be able to connect to the C4 when it is using the MC6 Pro USB host facility. My guess is not, but worth a try.

My MC6 Pro is running the same setup which I ported over from my MC8: a landing page which has a button to take me to a dedicated page for each connected pedal.

My FI page has buttons which allow me to choose what my expression pedal controls at any given time (CC1 by default, but will control filter cutoff, volume, synth volume, glide time and a secondary modulation source (CC3)). I also have buttons for PC up/down which double as bank up/down controls. Long pressing the pc up button turns it into a tap tempo button for the FI’s internal clock. I have another button set up for sustain and one for dry kill.
