Future Impact now available!! WAS: deep impact reissue!!! interested?

Does anyone have any experience/knowledge about getting these pedals repaired? My Future Impact 1 has stopped working, it only makes sound if I press down on the output knob. Without any pressure no sound comes through. Hopefully it's an easier fix with something just loose near the output knob. Not having a lot of luck reaching out to local places near me.

To my knowledge, not as yet. I’m hoping that will be an option later. I’m sure there are plenty of folks who’d want this.
I read a response on the ad for the FI v4 VIP implying that the smaller enclosure required some hardware changes to fit the pedal and so wouldn't be an option? Hopefully I'm mistaken as I'd love a smaller enclosure @Andras Szalay

Pedal internals are identical. The foot switches in the VIP aren’t as tall.

The only potential internal difference would be if the wires connecting the foot switches to the circuit board needed to be slightly longer in the VIP as they are in a different place on the housing surface, but it might be that the wires were already sufficiently long to accommodate the change.

I hope you are right! Hopefully Andras chimes in, I assume he is the one who runs the Facebook account and made the comment I was referencing. I'd be happy to do some simple rewiring as necessary to make mine fit as long as that's all that is required- or even buying some taller footswitches.

My VIP should be getting here today! Any pro tips on getting the most out of it? I've always wanted a FI, but never took the plunge.

Is there a place where people are sharing presets you can grab for inspiration?

And are there any must know things about using midi or a footswitch to change presets etc?
Pro tip 1 is read the manual:

Shared patches are all available via the Global directory in the Editor (see manual for details).

MIDI connection is likewise covered in the manual.

The best setup for me has been the Morningstar stuff as I can use it as the interface for the editor and to control the pedal without having to change anything. I set it up for playing and if I want to connect to the editor, I simply plug a USB cable from the MS controller into my computer.

Nice, thanks. Figured with something that's been around this long that there would be some community best practices etc

I have a gigrig on the way and will use that to trigger midi on my H90 and the FI, once I can figure all that out (never really got into midi, tbh)

Got the vip today downloaded latest editor and while I can load from the vip into the editor, I cannot upload to the VIP. The app just crashes. I tried to update firmware through the app and it says not connected. Of course I can then still download from the VIPFI just fine. Not sure what is going on here.

Bit hard to diagnose without more info. But app crashes for me are often the result of a midi loop. You send midi data from the editor to the FI and it comes screaming back to the editor, and goes out again etc., etc., and the app crashes. Maybe check if you have midi thru enabled on the FI.

The update process is detailed in the manual. You have to put the pedal into update mode before sending the update file. However, the VIP should be shipping with the latest firmware anyway (v4.11) so no need to update.

If you’re on windows, make sure no other MIDI usb connections are in use as windows only allows a single instance.

As always, please read the manual to ensure you are following steps correctly.

Ok I updated firmware successfully on the old FI4 and did
“Download from FI”
Then saved all in a folder

Then did “load from directory”
Then I do “upload to FI” and it crashes
Then I repeat the above but select the first patch and I get “Error: the directory does not contain any FI Programs!”

But of course I just downloaded them from the device itself into that folder.

MIDI thru is disabled and firmware is 4.11

The manual does not assist with this error.

Between the Morningstar and Mortrix which would you get, if you were just setting up?

Are you talking about loading a bank of 99 patches into the pedal via the manager? If so, you need click “load from directory” and specify a folder to load from to populate the tiles, then click “upload to FI”.

(Check your specified folder to see if you have duplicate numerical entries if you are getting an error when trying to upload it.)

(Also, why would you ever need to download the contents of the pedal and then immediately re-upload them to the pedal having made zero changes?)

Tough call, depends on what you need it to do.

From a price consideration, MS is obviously cheaper.

MS can be used as a USB interface whereas Mortrix currently can’t (it’d require a yet-to-be-produced add-on module. (Innate USB MIDI capability was something I asked for in development but the hardware was kind of already specified too much to add it.)

Mortrix currently doesn’t have dynamic labelling; i.e. a tile doesn’t display a different message depending on what message is being sent. Again, this something I pushed for right from the outset but it hasn’t yet been implemented. There is at least now the capability of having a different text displayed depending on whether the preset is engaged or disengaged. There is also now a live edit control overlay for seeing PC numbers on Mortrix, but it’s not the same as the MS’s ability to have individual scroll counter readouts on any tile.

Mortrix has simpler button interaction than MS: Mortrix just has press and long press (latching or momentary), whereas MS can assign things to double-taps, long-double-taps. MS’s extra complexity means you can potentially do more on one button but it comes at the expense of potentially forgetting what button actions are in use and what they do. Mortrix is more straightforward in that button actions kind of always do the same thing.

MS handles expression messages on a per-bank basis. Mortrix handles them per preset, but they can also be re-used with a bank (scene) in numerous ways so this is much more powerful.

Mortrix is very intuitive to program, with lots of the tedium removed, and no need to connect to a computer to program it. It also has some amazing features that are not possible on MS, especially in the realm of expression, envelope, LFO and sequencer uses.

Test case that should function.
I agree that that shouldn’t cause a problem so it sounds like something in the code needs attending to to prevent this error happening. Does sound like either it’s not linking to the cache folder (which is what is used for uploads, I believe) or there’s a duplicate within the cache folder. What I think is happening is that saving causes the saved folder to be the last-seen location and so where the editor looks for uploads when in fact uploads actually take place from the cache folder and this gets populated via the load function.

Try it with the real-world method I suggested above and see if there’s still a problem.

I agree, It depends on what you’re looking for.
I have both, I started out with the Morningstar MC6 and an ML5 when they were released.
I now have the MC6 Pro ,ML10X and also an MC3.
I picked up the Mortrix on the first drop.
I am by far a midi expert so my opinion is only based on my personal use and I will try to keep it short.
I mostly use midi for loop switching .
I love the Morningstar line but, you need to spend some time with it. I have watched it grow over the years since I first bought mine. They are constantly updating the firmware based on user requests and input. It just keeps getting better.
Bottom line , if you don’t have any experience with midi, it is not very user friendly but there are a lot of people willing to help on the Morningstar forum.
As I said, I picked up one of the first Mortrix.
I love the Mortrix equally as well. Like Morningstar, they are constantly updating based on user input, requests and overall QOL updates.
I find this controller to be very user friendly.
If you want to jump right into midi with minimal effort, I would recommend the Mortrix.
If you don’t mind deep diving, I would recommend MorningStar.
For myself personally, both can do way more than I will ever use or need.
On big plus for me with the Mortrix is the built in Bluetooth. When that was added that was a game changer for me.
If I had it to do over again, I would probably go with the Mortrix and be completely satisfied.
This is nothing against MorningStar. I have been 1000% satisfied with them.
Both companies have impeccable customer service and support. The fact that you can work directly with the owners of both companies is a bonus as well.
Now if they would just get the midi up to par on the Quad Cortex I would be very happy.
