The free software to edit DX7 patches is called “Dexed”: Invalid Link Removed
Honestly tweaking a DX7/FM patch is super complicated, not at all as predictable as a typical analog/subtractive synth engine is, which is why most of the songs that used the DX7 in the 80s/90s were using straight preset sounds (the reason the synth bass, electric piano, and lead key lines on so many songs sounded identical in the 80s). Part of that was that editing on the DX7 itself was something of a nightmare, but also because it took a deep understanding of the way it works to get anywhere useful with it, and it is not nearly as intuitive as subtractive synthesis IMO. If you search Google for “DX7 SysEx” or “DX7 patches”, etc you will find lots of sysex patches that apparently should be uploadable to the FI with the new software. If there are 99 FM patches already loaded in the new firmware then I would assume most of the classic DX7 bass sounds are already accounted for. I’m looking forward to seeing what else they cooked up- FM sounds can get super crazy!

So far I’ve loaded separate files. Not sure if it’ll handle a cartridge file of 32 yet. One would need to specify the starting slot I guess.

+ on this, I will happily admit that the DX7 was much like the Tube Screamer in a sound I really hated because they were ubiquitous. I had a DX7 in my collection for years but could never get a grasp on what was going on inside those sounds, but I bought it dirt cheap and eventually sold for a serious profit.
Will I welcome those sound opportunities in the FI v4, indeed for bass and key sounds.

I think the DX7 only loaded in banks of 32 patches (originally in actual physical cartridges, but that was also how the DX7 SYSEX files were arranged), so most of the files you find of DX7 sounds are in packages of 32. You can load and individually audition and tweak these banks into Dexed, and I believe from there you can export single patches but I have personally never done that. Maybe this process will be in the manual when the new FI firmware comes out!

Yep, I hated the EP1 patch, mainly because it was used on so many cheesy 80s songs. However I totally changed my mind when I borrowed one for a while, which was subsequently given to me as a birthday gift by a dear friend. Once I started to dig in, I realised how insanely powerful it is, if somewhat unintuitive.
