There’s a list of patches but the algorithm is not listed with them.

Simply changing the algorithm isn’t all that conducive to getting useful results. It is worth studying the different arrangements to which are close relations of each other.

Found this one, finally a good bass sound to start with..

You need to select DIR where the exported .syx file from dexed is, then the .syx file is opened and contains the 32 FM patches. Just as mentioned in the FI_V4.5_Addendum07.pdf.

it's a workaround for now.

If it really bothers you, download them and run the batch convert command in the file menu. Don't see why you'd need to bother though as the editor converts them automatically upon loading.

But aren't V3 programs built for older tracking and different response curves than V4?

Accidentally loaded an old V3 file to the V4.5 editor. editor refused to open once closed. needed to delete and re-install. Following addendum instruction to go from FM using "HOLD ON/OFF in NOTE OFF , turn to NOTE ON parameter to switch from GLB to InS. Nope. Stays in GLB. have powered down the pedal and still, no movement off GLB.

Ponderous man.

In addition to what Quatsch said, there are a few sounds on the online archive that have been labelled with invalid symbols such as $%#-. The editor refused to upload those to my FI until I renamed them without the symbols.

So trial/edit/headscratch your patches in Dexed and then upload to FI

Otherwise Panda audio woild end up making their own edit version of Dexed … which already exists and is free, woild run out of screen space …

And have people on this thread asking a billion questions about “how do you program FM synths?”!

@Quatschmacher Since the update to 4.5, when I send midi notes into Ableton, it receives the correct note, and in addition, it ALWAYS plays C1, regardless of the note I am playing. I have the pitch bend set properly, and when I change it to 0, it still occurs. This did not happen before the update. Cheers

The sound generation parameters are the same.

You may wish to change the tracking priority setting and resave though. .

I think you may need to explain more clearly what you are doing here so we can know what it is that isn’t working as you expect.

Do you mean generating MIDI note data by playing the FI from your bass and sending the midi note output into Ableton?

Remember that this only works in VA.

Yeah that makes sense.

I had a look at the human readable .pr4fm files from FI editor and then the binary .syx files from dexed.

It's really a dexed > FI editor and not a FI editor > dexed > FI editor thing.

I think I will make a list of all the algo's used in FI V4.5 FM ptaches, in spreadsheet to sort it out and organize.

I need Synth Bass sounds for rock, metal and industrial, so trying to figure out what useful for me.

Not sure that will result in meaningful info. The sounds are not only dependent on the arrangement of operators, but also the depths used. It’s entirely possible for patches made with different algorithms to sound exactly the same as each other. For example, just because a patch uses a certain algorithm does not mean that necessarily all operators are active.

Of course the parameters etc. make a certain impact, but too does the algo based on my short experimentation in dexed.

With expression I only seem to hear this LFO like a tremolo effect sound on any of the FM patches and I don't want that
Would it make sense to change the modulators of the carriers with expression, since that would seem complex?

In FM, any of the parameters from VA that are capable of being assigned to a flexi controller are available to be assigned.

Read the section in the v4.11 manual on Flexi Controllers.

Yeah, just as I did before the update, I send midi note data using a VA patch with the external midi on, pitch bend set correctly, and now when playing, any note I play is accompanied by a C1 note. I have been using it for months in this fashion without this happening. I can play drum beats using a drum rack, piano chords using Expressive Chords into a keyboard sound; Ableton's various synths; all functioned as intended. Now, there is this extra note data.

Well lots to learn about...

You'd be better served just going through that FM patch collection that I and others have pasted a link to in this thread in the previous pages. Somebody went through thousands of patches, threw out the duplicates, and organized them. There are heaps, with plenty of bass sounds.
