Sorry for the dumb questions about international purchases. I honestly don't think I've ever purchased anything internationally online except through Amazon. When I've traveled I put stuff on my card, I know I lose a few percent there, but it's usually stuff I'm getting reimbursed for anyway.

I think if you get charged a brokerage fee your duty tax will be rolled into that. You might pay no fee, just a customs fee, or an all inclusive brokerage fee.

I - as you know - purchase lots of things internationally. And companies that are organized make it super easy

Then other companies - eBay, tnt, ups, etc etc etc - like to take advantage of international customers and small companies that are not as organized.

It's a huge bummer.

Re: brokerage/exchange fees, 426 Euro is 467 USD; I paid $481, and I assume the fees were included in Paypal's conversion. I've never paid internationally via Paypal before, can anyone confirm how this works?

The direct translation in conversion price 426 = 467, yes. But every bank charges an "exchange" fee, even paypal. But to only be charged a $14 fee is cheap. If i had used my actual bank account for an overseas purchase, it would have cost me over $50 in fees.

I've never had that happen with international orders but I have no idea what TNT is. USPS should make the final delivery in the states. Whenever I've had to pay duty fees in the US I've had to pay USPS when they deliver the package. The last time it happened I had to give the delivery person a check. She said she had never seen that happen before so it is apparently pretty uncommon.

Paypal's exchange rate is incorrect. I'm going to hold off on purchasing until they fix it and hopefully the VAT stuff will be corrected. It is attempting to charge $481 whereas the exchange should be $465.

It depends on who makes the final delivery. If its USPS, I've never had a brokerage fee. If its UPS or FedEx, then its been 50/50 on getting charged or skated...

Yep it is impossible to predict. I've had brokerage fees with USPS twice.

You will be waiting a long, long time.

It will not be "fixed". PayPal's exchange rates have always been, and likely always will be, inflated in PayPal's favour.

And they also make money exchanging the other way, from Euros to dollars. It is really no different than the exchange windows at the airport. There is a price they will sell you a currency, and a price they will buy the currency. The spread is their profit.
