Ive been listening to Mudhoney, MC5 and The Stooges all day today. I feel the need now for a little fuzz to play with. If you was to buy a fuzz with those bands in mind, what fuzz would you buzz?

Those are 3 of my favorite bands ever. The clips below are pretty cool if you haven't seen them already.

A muff-style fuzz would work with those bands. I wouldn't get an EHX muff since the mids are totally scooped out. There is a wide variety of muff clones which sound so much better in a band mix than EHX, like a Vick Audio Black Russian or Idiotbox Cool Buzz Bass Fuzz.

I think a Muff variant is definitely what you’re after but I agree with @AaronVonRock on avoiding the EHX version. There are literally endless amounts of quality muff variants out there nowadays. The mids being scooped out is a huge problem for cutting through the mix. Check out the fuzzrocious grey stache. It has a controllable mids knob that is useful in the “cutting through” department. There are dozens of fantastic ones available for relatively low prices.

I went out and got myself a Stomp Under Foot Green Russian clone (the one with the Russian lettering on it), I love it and don't feel like it loses the lows. Don't have a lot of experience with others, but from all I've read I'd be really interested to try the Team Awesome Fuzz Machine

The team awesome fuzz machine is incredible. Not the muffiest fuzz but that shouldn’t deter you from checking it out OP. It’s super versatile, has a gate, and a clean blend knob which is nice. I’m gonna link my YouTube channel below. If you poke around through my videos you’ll find tons of fuzz demos I’ve done including the team awesome fuzz machine. Also, the Bluebeard which has been my favorite muff for awhile.

The new Sovtek Deluxe by Electro-Harmonix is the answer to your quest.
Great pedal, with mids knob to prevent the midscoop that some have warned against above, and it's super affordable considering the options.
I'd get one of those if I were you.

Big Muff - Supercollider, Bluebeard, or any other, there are (too) many out there.
Superfuzz - SS/BS Buzzz for example.

New Sovtek Deluxe solved the mids issue on EH Muffs. Killer pedal, plus EXP control over mids frequency makes it a Wah too.

Those who say 'avoid EHX' have apparently not been following what has been going on there. I used to think that way as well, for good reason, as their Muff's stank.

However, they recently 'rebooted' the line and have released new versions of the Green Russian, TriMuff, and OpAmp Muffs. They replicate the originals and are fantastic.

But the highlight is the Sovtek Big Muff they recently released. It has a clean blend, parametric mids control, tone wicker, expression input, and gate. Basically anything you'd ever want in a Muff. The downside is the sheer size of the pedal, but if that's not an issue it's a fantastic Muff.

Honorable mention to the JHS Muffuletta, which is a slew of different era Muff's in one pedal but does not have the extra features. Stomp Under Foot and Wren And Cuff are also great if you want something made more like they were back in the day.

Holy crap that thing is huge! Looks great though, it seems to have everything available to overcome the previous versions issues.

I know we are talking muffs but since @Fuzzonaut mentioned superfuzzes, I have to say that the ss/bs buzzz is absolutely crushing. I just bought one and I’m in love with it already.

Black Russians are relatively easy to find and not yet overpriced like the green ones. They are in my opinion the best sounding one on bass. If there is one in your area give it a try

Nice collection! I wish the Cloven Hoof or Musket had a clean blend like the EHX Sovtek. I don't need 'full on' fuzz in my signal, I like a 50/50 mix. And I need it to be in a pedal the size of the Hoof/Musket. I love the Sovtek, but man it takes up some precious board space. I might just have to deal with it, as clean blends and mid controls seem to be like unicorns. Plenty of Muff's have one or the other, but few have both.

Nice collection! I wish the Cloven Hoof or Musket had a clean blend like the EHX Sovtek. I don't need 'full on' fuzz in my signal, I like a 50/50 mix. And I need it to be in a pedal the size of the Hoof/Musket. I love the Sovtek, but man it takes up some precious board space. I might just have to deal with it, as clean blends and mid controls seem to be like unicorns. Plenty of Muff's have one or the other, but few have both.

I'm the opposite, I'm not a fan at all of blends on fuzz pedals (except the team awesomes not so clean blend) but I do agree 100% that mids on muffs are a necessity.
With both deluxes, for me, the features out weigh the size by a mile.
