Spock's Brain. Nice. Do you feel you're compromising anything with the Gould for the Phish/Gordon thing, compared to a Modulus? Also, what kind of strings do you use?

I know this question wasn't for me, but having been one that jumped from a Q5 to a GGi5, absolutely no compromise whatsoever! The neck shape, body shape, overall weight, balance, and electronics are vastly preferred on all of my GGi basses (two 5's and a 4). Geoff's basses fit me better by far and large. I haven't really ever listened to Phish, but I do know he goes for a more rounded neck pickup tone and I do as well. The custom neck pickup EMG makes for Geoff sounds enormous and I am usually rolled about 75-80% towards it on my bass that has it.

Strings - DR Lo Rider Nickels 45-130 are the preferred choice on my GGi5's, but the stainless sound good as well and I can usually find those on the shelf somewhere in a pinch.

I own a Modulus Q6 and a ggi6. I really enjoy both of them. The ggi6 has EMG electronics including the sweepable mid control that I installed and the Q6 has Bartolini electronics. Both are wonderful basses. My ggi6 weighs less than 9 pounds. My Q6 weighs 10 pounds, 6 ounces.

Both are keepers in my opinion.

Well, IMHO, there are huge differences in even between my 2 Neck thru Modulus bass... My Q5's have slight differences as well. Completely different from my G. Goulds. Not to mention completely different from my Genesis basses. They seem to me to have slightly different feels to them. Now, add my buddies newer (2012) Q5 and they get even more different. I much prefer my 1980's Neck thru (not TBX) to any other. Slight C style, not too thick, narrow spacing, and great body style. The feel is incredible.

oof... with the add-ons that i'd want, my 'dream build' would cross $10k.

geoff, since your delving back into the GGJ builds with the maple/hybrid neck, would a G. Gould with a neck-thru maple/hybrid neck be possible?

I've come across a Gould locally in the used market and began to branch out looking for other Gould options. Found this j bass on eBay but can't find any additional info on when it was produced. It's beautiful though and I'm really tempted with the Barts installed.

Anyone know anything about or have something similar?

I believe it is a GGj4. I had a GGj5 wood neck. Geoff is now offering wood neck versions again. My 1998 was more P-bass neck sort of feel. A bit thick, but not too bad. Great overall bass if it is set up properly

I had the opportunity to try a friends GGi5 a few days ago and was very, very impressed with the feel, tone and quality. Really jaw dropping, punchy, in your face goodness!
It was a lot of fun playing a 35” scale bass again! I’m an admitted midrange tone control snob and I thought I’d be bothered by the lack of a midrange EQ section. I was very much mistaken. It was so easy getting a variety of tones just by using the pickup blend and a touch of bass and treble. I was really impressed with the natural voicing and simplicity of the controls.

I’m a Status Graphite enthusiast so the carbon fiber neck felt really comfortable and familiar.

I can definitely see one (or two!) in my future.

Well I got my new to me Trans Red Gould with a stunning maple board back from the luthier! Ooh, it is beautiful! Now, I am on the hunt for a 4 string. Fretted or Fretless. It is about the only one I don’t have and really would have preferred one at last night’s gig
