there are four basses from the same piece of wood. I'll try and collect pics of them!
Hey there, forgive me for asking something that’s probably been asked many times before, but the thread is a little long to go searching for various details, and it seems as though the line has evolved over time.
For a number of years, I had a quantum five SPi and ended up selling it during a rather dark period of my life. I don’t know the exact year of manufacture, but I believe it was somewhere in the early to mid 90s. SN 963371 so I’m guessing 1996, I bought it in 1998. Certainly before truss rods were added. It had the DC pickups. It had the usual alder body and quilted Maple top. (I also had a 4 SPi #911117, But I used it as a partial trade for the five). I’ve missed the 5 since I let it go.
I’ve become very interested in picking up a G Gould, especially since the used modulus market is quite expensive. And besides, why not continue to support the pioneer? The rainbow trout finish calls my name.
So I’m wondering what the differences are between the GG “custom” model and my old quantum? Not just technical but sonically.

I'm sure Geoff might chime in on this, but for starters he usually installs his custom EMG pickup in the neck which is a single coil that includes (I believe) a phantom coil to eliminate hum. I have found myself rolling about 80% towards it the majority of the time because it's BIG and FAT. Much more so than the standard EMG CS pickup or the Barts that were in my old Q5. However, since it's an EMG setup you can always swap them very quickly and easily with anything else from their line. Geoff is also agnostic about pickups, so if you are wanting to have something built he can likely throw whatever you want in it that falls within the building parameters.
I've posted this many times before in this thread, but I sold my Q5 to get a GGi5 and I have absolutely zero regrets. Now I have two 5's and a 4

The SST got the call up again for our church services over the weekend. It sat very tight in our live streaming mix and every note popped out with authority with a huge fatness to it. I used both pickups on full for that signature gospel bass tone for our rendition of Israel Houghton’s “Not Forgotten” and I rolled to the sweet spot/MM position pickup for the rest of the songs. Having a bass with this kind of versatility is exactly why I bought it!

Got to play 2 shows this weekend and am absolutely floored how good this bass sounds GGI5 -> Sushi Box Underground Accelerator as clean boost - MXR DI -> Fender Rumble 800c for the clean sound (various other pedals at different times)

I made a trade with Brian Martin and am now the owner of two of Geoff's basses. This is my third ggi5 and I like it the best of the three I have had. My ggi6 has a spalted Maple top over Alder and the ggi5 has flame Maple over Swamp Ash. They both sound lovely. The ggi5 seems to have a smaller neck than the other two I have had. I may be remembering wrong but it seems thinner front to back. It plays great.
