G&L Bass

My L-2500 tribute is hands down the most versatile bass guitar I've ever played. If I had to get rid of all but one bass guitar (I also own a P, a fretless P/J and a Stingray), I wouldn't even hesitate to dump all but the L-2500. If I owned zero bass guitars and needed one, I'd probably buy a USA L-2500. I'm actually surprised they don't get more hype on here, but I'm loving mine.

I have a Tribute SB-2 with no tone knob. I think it's an awesome bass for the money but the factory strings whatever it is they put on it is not my cup of tea and pretty awful imo. Just mentioning that because changing the strings made a huge difference so if you try one at the store, keep that in mind.

Got G&L's version of the traditional Pbass, the LB-100. I am absolutely thrilled with it. Stock locking high mass bridge, bone nut and alnico pickups. Craftsmanship, fit and finish is perfect. Neck profile makes it a dream to play. Lightweight and has monstrous tone. I would buy another G&L for sure.

I never owned one, but I've always been intrigued by G&Ls and try them whenever I can.

My impressions so far (mostly based on L and SB series):
  • The good: They're build well and feel good. Tribute or American, they are pretty nice. They also offer a lot of different neck options, if you buy new. They have many different models for different purposes/needs, and some have really flexible electronics (like L2000).
  • The bad: 5 string spacing is imo too narrow. And they do look like Leo Fender creations, if that bothers you...
  • The ugly: I just can't get excited enough to buy one. While versatile, I ultimately don't bond with them tonally. There's always too much of this, too little of that... Maybe I'd need to spend more time with them, dial them in?
The one exception is probably the Kiloton. Packs a punch. That big MFD really works well in that spot. If they made one with a neck pickup that's splitable into single coil, that might be a winner. Like maybe a Kiloton/Wunkay hybrid (not L2k). Or simply an HS version...

Yes, a USA-made G&L.
It's the one with the factory tone knob, not the aftermarket one, although those can be found on Ebay from Japan.
I just happen to know of a beautiful SB-2T for sale. I promised myself I'd buy it but I'd have to buy using Affirm (buy now pay later) because I don't have the cash. Affirm was only able to approve me for $1,000, so I had to pass.
Bass is still available. If it's still available a few months from now, maybe I can afford it but I did just buy something else.

Thanks. I did not know the actual designation of the model. Definitely one of those. You don't see a ;lot of the sb-2T models, out there, do you? I like the rosewood neck but the blue sparkle and white pickguard wouldn't be my first choices. Hopefully it's still there when you are ready to get it.

Mine's on order. My buddy has two on order and will be touring one each with two bands from this point out so he can semi retire his still perfect, original owner, first year L1000. Yeah, goooood stuff, highly recommended!

I'm a Recovering Rickenbacker Fanboy and have gravitated to G&L (USA) in the last few years with: an ASAT Tele Bass (sold it), a Jazz (sold it), and a pine-bodied LB-100 (sold it).

Currently own: an SB-2T Monkey Pod, an '85 El Toro, a Kiloton Blackburst, and a CLF Pharoah Gold Wunkay.

Would definitely recommend them. :thumbsup:

They are an incredible company with a line up of basses that gives nothing up to any other company out there.

Classic fender style basses to in your face hot nastiness.

Their import line is phenomenal and their US operation allows a fantastic level of personalisation on your instrument. Good options.

Their pickups are awesome and their bridge design is so so good.

Their burst finishes are sublime.

I even like the pointy bit on their head stocks!
