G&L Club Part 2

i've been playing these since 1981. i'm sure there are guys with different experiences than mine, but, that's not been my experience.

Okee dokee. I think I'm going to remove the preamp and preamp switch and install an additional outer singles/parallel/inner singles switch in it's place. Now I just need to figure out what connects to the output jack when I bypass the preamp.

Do it. I don't think you'll regret it. I pulled the preamp out of my L2500 and haven't missed it yet. The G&L website has schematics available.

IMO, G&Ls are a great platform for modification.

Can I get a number. OK I have other G&Ls that I paid a lot more for, but found this mojo tone machine and never saw it coming. I was looking for a older rough bodied G&L to paint a custom color blue green or something cool and found this. It's 1987 G&L SB-1 and the E-bay pics showed lots of marks and some scrapes no case, but good electronics. So I got it cheap and awaited arrival while I thought of what color to finish the body. It shows up and it didn't look anywhere near as roughed up as the pics, and what looked like a crack in the body near the neck was just a mark that rubbed off. At least half of the what looked liked dents cleaned right off with soap and water. So now I'm looking a a nice Ivory faded bass with a few scrapes and some marks on the neck but nothing that affects playability or is noticeable. I plug it in and wow great tone but a little hard to get in perfect tune. Off come the strings and I cleaned up the neck and head, and on go some SIT Nickels and wow, I can't believe the tone. And now it stays in tune w/minor tweaks for new strings.

So I start plugging away and this bass is like an old bb glove, super easy neck, no setup even needed. So I check the intonation and make a minor tweak on the G & D and now perfect. Checked around the neck and notes are right on all over with no dead spots. I did find that the A-string intonation screw and spring were missing (funny thought the A-string intonation was still good, evidently the saddle lock bridge held the A-bridge in place), but good ole reliable G&L is sending the parts for free and won't take any payment for the parts (2nd time G&L came through with parts and I can't say enough good things about Mike & G&L).

So before the bass came I was looking for a case to match and someone on the other forum said they saw a case on e-bay for a late 80s G&L bass and so I bid on that and won it for way under $100. The case came from a different region so it wasn't the exact missing link, but it's a perfect fit and is the same vintage as the bass.

OK, so now I am forgetting about the painter, and I can't put this bass down. I'm actually going to take it to practice and give it a run. This bass feels so right I can't believe it. So anyway, hope you enjoyed my fun story and with this bass hope to join the G&L club. I hope my other fine G&L Basses don't get mad.

Wow, that is one gorgeous JB! Is the twin a HOG? That's a nice bass too, but the HOT one is just that, HOT!.

The sunburst has lots of personality, form the gun-oil-tint neck, to the Dunlop classic-style straplocks. She's my go-anywhere bass; the girl next-door who grew up into an 8, and is the one you go everywhere with; the wife.

The quilt-top is the supermodel who takes a fancy to you, laughs at your jokes, and enjoys being with you for being you (yeah, like that happens too often, right?). She has a satin finish on the back of the neck, and sports Dunlop Straplock II's. I'll order the Hipshot Xtender soon enough, since they have to be specially modded for G&L's.

Both have the same feel; like a lover whom you know every nuance about. Gotta love the #8 neck. They are like twin sisters, only one of them decided to go through some goth & boho phases, and still smokes, while the other one went to the best university, was the president of the hot chick sorority, and spends 4 nights a week in the gym. There's a tad more snap to the quilt-top's sound.

Simply put, I have the most bomb-azz passive American production J's on the planet. Even my limited edition 'wick is jealous.
