Many of the Alleva admirers/owners grouse about the headstock. I think it looks a lot like a G&L, so it don't bother me none at all.

I noticed that too, but there's no way I can afford an Alleva, so it's a non-issue anyway.

Just got a new to me (and almost brand new) SB-1. I really am a "flats man" and haven't played rounds for 5 or 6 years, so I changed to Roto 77s almost as soon as I got it. After about an hour of play I switched back to the original DA XLs, as I felt the SB-1 sounded better with rounds than flats.

I like the XLs, but I don't think they are the cat's pyjamas, so I'm looking for other strings that will match the bass and the MFD pups. Looking for strings with a little bit more warmth than the XLs. So, what strings do YOU use on your SB-1?

XLs are a pretty reliable choice, they're real middle of the road. For more warmth I'd just wait a few days and let them break in, or you could look at Fender 8250s or GHS Boomers.

String choice makes a big difference. Mine came with a half-dead set of Rotosound Steve Harris flats on it - sounded great! I soaked them in denatured alcohol for 24 hours and all the thumpy goodness is gone...I guess I'll have to play it back.

Couldn't you just rub some wax into them? That should replicate finger oil accumulation between the windings (it serves as a string damper) and would be easier on the metal. Try rubbing the strings down with wax paper.

I often use GHS Compressors on my ASAT bass. They are wrapped with alloy 52 (52% iron/48% nickel) and the wrap is compressed to give a flatter feel. MFDs love this alloy and I think you'd love this string. For a full roundwound, GHS offers the Boomer 52's, and Everly makes the B52's.

But I like the Compressors. I currently have them on my 1986 G&L Lynx, which is like a contoured 1st gen. SB-2 and it warmed it up nicely while retaining clarity and definition.

I've posted the bound birdeye maple L2500 before, but a couple weeks ago my wife surprised me with a nearly matching fretless L2500 for our 10th Anniversary. I've been using it a lot since and it's one heck of a bass!

Here's my two G&L babies together:

The fretless is all stock, but the fretted has been rewired for series(w/0.1uF cap)/SC/Parallel+Vol for each pickup. I do miss the tone controls, but haven't had time to wire up a dual concentric 6-pos switch for the bass/treble controls. I'll get around to it eventually...

I've got a couple other basses I enjoy and use, but these have been hogging most of my gigs, unless I'm playing jazz (then I use a Rick Turner).

G&L is good stuff!
