I sold all my active G&L's some time ago now. I'd sorta been itching to get one back; but, only if it came with single coil mode like my old 1981 L2Ke.
Got this from BigBee; a fine example of well worn, played to heck and still going. Previous owner, at some point, was a "locked in 3rd position" player. You can see where his thumb went (G, on the E string) and where the finish wore off the underside of the neck at that position as well.
The finish is extremely, finely, weather checked. Hard to photograph, but, You get the picture:

Following up on Chef's advice, I restrung my "1985" Wunkay yesterday with DR Lo-Riders to replace the Rotosounds I originally got for it in January. Here's a reminder:
I also needed to tweak the neck tilt, so I thought "what the heck, let's get the neck off". And behold

So the body is a 1983 and the neck is 1984. Therefore this makes it an official 1984, right? This is really curious as someone commented on my initial posting either here or at the G&LDP board along the lines of "that looks like a 1984".
I tuned up and tried this with my Trace rig and I think the hyper-bright tone of the Rotosounds is now gone and this baby starts to sound like a real bass. The slap tone on the "OMG" mode is a bit less bright as well, but works nicely. Next, I need to tweak the truss rod, string height, and intonation to get the setup to my liking. Right now my "go-to" bass is an Am Dlx Precision wound with Pyramid Gold flats. I just got a Hipshot bridge for it and now it sounds phenomenal. The G & L should be a contender now, with roundwounds. the only trouble I have is the shallow neck profile that I cannot do anything about. I tend to like more substantial necks.

I didn't believe I would be posting something like this:
I just passed on a local board 1989 SB-1 bass. The price was a bit high but the seller said the bass was in good condition, had been played on just a few dance gigs, and he was selling it for his father. What a load of ... sweet-talking. I drove 100 miles to see it too. The headstock was chipped badly and there were scratches, dents, and cracked finish all over. The neck was worn and so were the frets, lots of gunk and dead strings too (the seller said I would get a nice set of half-rounds on it). Seldom do I get that exhilarating feeling when the trunk closes and I don't have a piece of new gear in my hand.
This is actually the second time I pass on a G&L bass like this. The first one was a similarly worn Interceptor bass a few years ago. Why get worn gear if, with patience, you can get minty?

Used to be that SIT Powerwound nickel rounds were stock, and those are nice enough.
Now DA XL170 nickel rounds are stock and I like those better. They seem to last longer, are full, and have nice top end.
I don't like LaBella flats on G&L's (though I like them on a stock Fender P); but my last 1985 L2000 came with DA Chromes on it, and I really did like those.

I'm going to give SIT Powerflats a shot. I used to own an L2000 Tribute and remember liking PF's on that one.
