Last weekend, I brought my '81 L2000E to a recording session at a really fine studio. As soon as I had rehearsed one tune, the engineer exclaimed, "The bass sounds PHENOMENAL." One of the musicians, a sax player who has also owned and run his own recording studio for several years, loved how it sounded "fat, warm and rubbery."
(It didn't hurt that the engineer used an Aguilar tube DI for the bass, or that it was running through an old Pultec tube EQ.)
I brought it because I remembered how good it sounded on a live recording that I did a few years ago. Interestingly, I usually prefer Fenders for gigging, especially rock or blues gigs, because the G&L sounds modern and kind of "compressed." But it sure records well, and the recent session in question was jazz and R&B, so the G&L's "refined" sound worked.
BTW, I had it in passive mode (battery actually removed), both pickups on, tone knobs all the way up, in humbucking mode. (L2000Es give you choice of humbucking OR single coil w/bass boost.)
Just thought I'd share.

Here's a pic of me playing it at the Bitter End in N.Y.C. It's mahogany, like yours, but I think the fingerboard might be rosewood. At least, it looks more like rosewood to me, even though I believe G&L didn't officially offer rosewood fingerboards on these.

all ebony isn't solid black, a lot of it gets the figuring "stained out of it."

Here's my '81; been gone a while now. I had a fretted neck for it as well...

Here's an '85 slated to be here tomorrow (the white one, photo from seller BIGBEE). It has the single coil switch mode as well. It's maple/maple; hopefully it will be yards brighter than my old one.

I still have:
1980 L1K hog/ebony, tobacco burst
1981 L1k; maple, maple, CAR finish
1983 SB2JJ; maple/maple; white
1984 SB2J; maple/maple; seafoam

Mine has a clear finish. It has an interesting story, too...
The original neck was twisted and unworkable, but I found someone who had a defretted neck (dated a couple of months after mine) and he sold it to me for $50. I had it fretted with "vintage" (skinny) frets, because my repair guy/luthier suggested that they would warm up the tone. He was right! The neck has also been perfectly stable in the 10 years since.
Another reason that I love G&Ls: in a nanosecond after getting one in your hands, you can tell that it's a solid, beautifully made instrument. (And I'm definitely NOT a "boutique bass" guy. The other bass that I brought to the session last week is a MIM Jazz with flatwounds, and I bring an SX Precision to a lot of blues/classic rock gigs.)
But, yes-- G&Ls are something special.

Question and I'm not sure if this is going to come across correctly- but do I have to have the bass boost knob up in order to get any real sound out of this thing or is something not right? If I have treble and boost all the way down and volume all the way up I get just about nothing out of my amp. In order to get any sound I have to have the bass knob up a bit

The bass and treble are cut-only, no boost. So yes if you turn both of them all the way down you're not going to get much out of it. Put them about half way and go from there.

Still having the problem. Played a 5er yesterday and I could get way more volume just with tone up and bass completely cut. With mine, nothing really in terms of sound/volume unless bass is all the way up nothing like the other one I played so I'm going to guess something is up. Any idea on what could be wrong- connection problem or something like that?

Old, dirty, dinged, and in need of a professional setup, but looks like she has the sound...
