Very nice SB-1. They really do put out some punch and great necks as you have described. Won't find it too easy to scratch the PG either. I have a white(now cream)/maple 87 SB-1cousin and quite like it. Welcome to the club!

Yeah, I had an early 80's SB-1 with a crinkle bridge and cavity cover and it looked fantastic. +1!

I recently acquired my first G&L, a L2000 Tribute in blueburst.
6 years old, made in Korea.
Esh body and maple neck.
Plays and sounds very nice.
It is now my no.1 bass

Loving my L2500 but could use some help from y'all

Got mine used and it was modded - in a good way

It has an ebony board and an Audere 4-band preamp with pickup blend. I have switches to *independently* change the pickups from Series to Parallel.

So far, my favorite setting when playing with the band is:

the blend slightly favoring the Bridge pickup
Bridge pickup in parallel mode (for clarity)
Neck pickup in series mode (to thicken up tone)
bass boosted 50% (this is an active only preamp)
treble boosted 40%
low and high mids boosted 20%
mid-Z switch
volume at 100%

I'm loving the tone, but sometimes don't feel it has enough thickness and note definition. I am using nickel roundwounds (D'Addario XLs) strung through the bridge. My action is fairly low, so there is some "clanking" going on.

Should I try stanless steel? Should I experiment with pickup height? String height? Any recommendations on eq settings or blend amount? Strings are 3 months old so that could be it too.

I don't know what an Audere does to an L2500. However, series would be better for thickness.

And you shouldn't have any difficulty getting thickness and note definition. Those are an L2500's strong suite.

I can't say for certainty, but from what I've read the Audere is transparent when set flat. I'm boosting eq's a bit from my description though. This could just be me trying to get more volume though. I could try setting the eq flat to see where I stand.

I know my fretted L2500 really, really likes new strings.

My fretless actually cares much less and sounds great no matter how old the strings are. They are almost 2 different animals, despite being almost identical except for the fretless ebony board and fretted maple.

hmmm, I'm suprised. I'm finding this along with a Bartolini NTMB to be the best preamp around in terms of noise, tone control and headroom.

It may be worth a try to disable it though.

The 2500 was destined to depart anyway, the two aren't related...other than they're both black
